Simply for my own curiosity, I’m wondering how far people go with narrating sex in their games. What I mean is, where do you fade to black and cut to the next scene? Obviously the correct answer is “as far as your group feels comfortable going”, I’m just curious about where that is generally speaking.

So, where do you fade to black?

I ran a one-shot (first session?) game yesterday for my three players, one of whom was new to PbtA games. We did character creation and three scenes in about three hours. Things went fantastically, everyone had a blast, and I’m sure everyone would be onboard if we decided to continue. Something came up during the game that I wanted some clarification on though. It’s about the Janus.

The Janus’ move I am what you see is a bit unclear to me. When the other player says what label they want to impose on the Janus, does that mean the Janus has to shift that label? I think that’s what’s meant to happen, as “impose” is a pretty strong word, and it wouldn’t make sense for the Janus to get a benefit without paying some kind of price.

So if that is how the move works and the Janus has to shift the named label up, does the Janus get to choose what label shifts down?

Looks like I might (finally) be running a one-shot of Masks next weekend and I have a question:

Is v3 the most recent version of the game, or is there a more recent one?

I had to back the kickstarter through a friend and so don’t get the updates directly. Should I ask him to check his email for a newer version?

I’ll be MCing a PbP game soonish, and one of the players has requested to play The Rusalka.

I’ll be MCing a PbP game soonish, and one of the players has requested to play The Rusalka. It’s the first time I’ve seen the Skin, and had a question. Maybe Brie Sheldon can help me out here.

The second part of the Sex Move says: “When the other person has sex with someone else, they lose a String on you.” How long does that last? Is it meant to be a one time effect that can only be triggered after the Rusalka and another character have sex? Or is it something that can happen any number of times after a character has sex with the Rusalka?

I interpret it as the latter, so that once a character has sex with the Rusalka, they are mechanically encouraged to stay faithful. Just checking though.

Finally picked up Uncharted Worlds. The player principles on page 8 are just fantastic.

Today, February 3rd, is Setsubun (節分) here in Japan. It’s the day before the first day of spring, and is part of “haru matsuri”, the Spring Festival (春祭). Traditionally it was kind of a New Year’s Eve and it has an associated ritual, involving throwing beans, to cast out last year’s bad luck and keep evil spirits away for the current year.

One of the most iconic evil spirits here are Oni; giant horned monsters clad in animal skins that carry iron spiked clubs, similar to ogres. You see them everywhere for Setsubun, but they’ve taken on a comical and even cute appearance in modern times.

In honour of Setsubun I’m releasing a new version of my Oni Skin for Monsterhearts. There have been a few minor changes from the previous version (which was released about three years ago), but most of it is the same as before. The Oni was my first completely original Skin and has gotten a lot of positive comments, but, as always, feedback is greatly appreciated. Happy spring!

It’s been like two (three?) years since I released it and was thinking about updating it. It’s getting close to Setsubun here, the holiday where oni feature prominently, and it would be appropriate to upload it then. So I’m looking for any feedback people would be willing to share.

As people were so helpful before, I’m asking for more feedback.

Single-minded

At the start of the session, write down a goal you are working towards if you don’t already have one. At the end of the session, mark XP if you made noticeable progress towards reaching that goal. When you achieve the thing you were working towards, cross it off your sheet.

Eh. I dunno if I’m happy with that move. Again it’s for The Ox, and is trying to encourage the player to be a single-minded, goal oriented type character. Slow and steady, one foot in front of the other, one thing at a time.

Maybe there’s a way to do something similar without actually forcing the player to write down the goal. Or maybe it needs to be a roll move. Something like:

Single-minded

At the start of the session, write down a goal you are working towards if you don’t already have one.

When you make clear progress towards achieving your goal, roll with Dark. On a 7 up, the MC will tell you what the most likely next step is. On a 7-9, choose one:

– the next step involves heavy physical labor;

– the next step involves working with someone, the MC will say who;

– the next step involves sacrificing something, the MC will say what.

Hmm… Still not sure about that one either. I think I need to sleep on this. :/

Ruminate

When you take some time to slowly and methodically consider your options, give the MC a String on you. Then ask them, or a player whose character is directly involved in the situation, what your best course of action is; that player must answer you honestly.

The idea here is to encourage the player to be a slow, methodical thinker. Someone who considers all their options before taking action, sometimes to the point of letting an opportunity pass them by. Because the String goes to the MC in general rather than a specific character, I think that limits what the MC can do with that String. Thoughts? Does it seem like a fair trade-off, or should I find another way to encourage, slow, methodical thought?
