women assaulted and disfigured (but found alive in the woods), a city that was once known for numerous trials for witchery. Strange marks…

So I’ve managed to play my second game (the first as the keeper)!

It was a game intended as a one-shot but We didn’t finished the mistery, still I’m already in love with the game. Thank you Michael Sands!

Injury

I was reading the Technician’s injury section:

When you get injured, check an Injury box. Whenever you lose a match due to your injury, lose all Momentum. Whenever you push through your injury to win a match, gain +2 Momentum.

How can you loose a match due to injury?

Also, when you check the last box “you can no longer compete” it means for the rest of the match in wich you suffered the injury, or you can no longer compete at all? (Something like retire due to an injury).

You can watch it here: https://www.nfb.ca/film/hitman_hart_wrestling_with_shadows

(Or showing a part of himself that is in opposition with his character).

So, I’ve played the game for the first time…and If I had a top rpg list this would be in my top five!

So, I’ve played the game for the first time…and If I had a top rpg list this would be in my top five! (But I don’t like that kind of list).

About the game:

It was just three of us (all familiar with Aw): me as creative (I don’t watch wrestling since late 80’s), and other two friends (one of them surprised me because I didn’t know he was a real wrestling nerd!).

The talents:

Omega (hardcore), face paint, hooded shirt, loud music (can’t remember the song).

Thunder (technician), jeans outfit, thunderstruck by ac/dc as intro music, before the finishing moves he takes two

Drum sticks and mime a drum solo.

-We booked an event called “the Rodeo”.

-a few hilarious ommercials and promos.

-tv interview with the audience asking questions from home.

-a real messy match start by one of the talent (the HC), with tables, ladder, fire….

Some NTC

Magnificent Pit sends kisses to the audience during his entrance and sprays perfume on his opponents before finishing him.

black sheep he has a herd of…sheeps, and wears a furry hood.

professor rock rival of the Thunder (a talent).

Swamp Thing wears something like the camouflage stuff that usually army snipers wears in the woods.

sweet 54 some disco music dance.

The thing that I loved is that my friends

Really got into the spirit and the concept of the game, we really had a lot of fun (“when do we play again?!?” They keep asking).

It was good to have someone very familiar with wrestling, and the other guy found very useful the wrestling moves sheet.

Personally I completely delved into the creative role, and I had no problem coming up with stuff because the “how to be crative” and the manual in general it is very helpful and tells you everything you need in order to run the game.

I had a few doubts sometimes, like a guy that had way too much momentum (about 10?!?), but It was something I tweaked with the second episode.

And now I have a few question (just to be sure):

1) you don’t reset heat or audience when you get to 4+, right?

2) I had some question about injury, but I saw another post about it, so I’ll wait…

3) in the manual says that there’s a sheet with a list of names, but I couldn’t find it.

Go with the flow, one-shot game and expectations

A couple of days ago we played a one-shot game.

Before we started the game I was a little worried, our last Aw game was a long time ago and above all I’ve never played a one-shot of Aw.

I didn’t know how to handle it, nor had time to ask around for advices.

the starting idea

I came to the table with just one idea: it’s a frozen world. I pictured in my mind different hazards, and landscapes covered in dirty grey snow. Mentally taking notes of some potentally loaded questions about it.

….as I sit down to play, my first question was about the landscape..

Me: charlie (the skinner), what do you see from your window? By the way, do you have a window?

Player: I see an urban landscape, covered by a deep vegetation. A jungle.

Me: temperature? (Still hoping for a frozen jungle, at least).

Player: oh, it’s warm.

Me: and your home, what is like?

Player: a tall building.

Mc: like a skyscraper?

Player: yes.

Me: you own it? Who else lives with you?

Player: my family, like an aristocrathic-clan. We were the first to establish here.

After a few more questions, We had the skinner’s family lead by her father, Harridan, to run different business inside the holding, but not in charge. There was no one in charge of the holding.

Character creation and setting things on fire

I wanted to speed things up and avoid players to spend too much time choosing stats, weapon or moves. I wanted them to play (I know how my friends are, the battlebabe guy and his damn custom weapon options!).

So, We started with the Hx to establish relationships and some facts.

And then, when they barely have names I turned to the hocus (with no idea of what was about to happen):

So, obviousely someone is mad at you.

Your head hurts, and you hear an insistent whistle in your ears. Your hands are tight together, and you can’t see shit because you have something on your head. You can’t remember what happened.

You feel you are moving, maybe you are in a van. You hear someone laughing and kick you in the ribs from time to time.

What do you do?…

..and: savvy, you are fixing the battlebabe’s weapon and you see a guy with a bunny mask throwing the hocus in the back of a van and rapidly leave the holding.

What do you do?

Basically, I jumped the follow the characters around thing, (althought I did that part asking more questions) and went straight into the action, and it worked!

Once again, I’d guess that If everyone at the table collaborate to share and create (in this way you can even play against a specific Pc in the game fiction but with that player) the reward is greater than the effort.

last game time I had a player that wanted to use the move:

a)in the middle of a firefight with an enemy engaged with him to have his attention.

And

B) to tell a guy that was threatening him with a shotgun something like “give me the shotgun” like it was a charm spell.

My calls were A: yes, B: no.

What’s your experience about situations like this?

It started with the hocus, Soma The Sacred Seed, kidnapped by a guy named Butcher Bitch wearing a bunny mask…and it ended with an alien invasion.

Playbook:

Hocus, skinner, battlebabe, savvy.

Many interesting pc-npc-pc triangle. All the pc’s resolved their problems: someone fought for his own vision of the world, someone else to avange the one they love, other for their little shelter or against their own family.

And then the aliens arrived!

So, I’ve just purchased the Pdf…and it is amazing!

It is a fascinating and dense game, that will for sure give life to unforgettable stories.

Now, some minor speculations..

While reading the book I was thinking about the comic Northlanders and, oh It appears in the mediography!

I think Sven (from the book one) could easily fit the Wanderer playbook, and Enna could be played as the Monster.

The overall concept of the saga reminds me of Northlanders – the icelandic trilogy, where we see how the action of Ulf Hauksson, as a child, influenced the life of the future generations.

Can’t wait to play it!
