So here’s a custom move from Liars and Bastards All, my Dungeon World hack of Locke-Lamora-esque adventure.

It’s meant to simulate a desperate action, and to build tension, plus play into the gambling, free wheeling nature of the source material. My concern is that it’s mostly mechanical, though it shouldn’t be too hard to simulate fiction around.

What do you think?

Push your luck

When you push your luck instead of accepting a partial success, Roll the original Move again.

On a 10+ you succeed as per that move.

On a 7-9 you can accept the partial success for that move, or Push Your Luck again.

On a 6-, the GM gets to make a hard move against you, and against one of your comrades for every time you pushed your luck before failing. You can only Push Your Luck as many times as there are other players in the game.

How many moves is too many?

How many moves is too many?

How many moves is too many?

Working on a fantasy noir hack roughly inspired by The Lies of Locke Lamora. I’ve currently got 18 basic moves, which are divides into stealth moves, social moves and combat moves.

While it covers off pretty much everything you’d want to do in this game, it instinctively strikes me as too many moves.

It’s a balance between specificity and simplicity. What’s the largest number of moves you’ve played with before it felt like too many?

Has anyone on here seen Nina Forever?

Has anyone on here seen Nina Forever? Total Monsterhearts movie. The ghost of a young woman reappears whenever her boyfriend and his new lover have sex. Nina, the ghost, isn’t convinced that being dead means they’re broken up. Great film.

Having just read Dungeon World and Monsterhearts, am sorely tempted to write a game called “Hack, Slash, Love”.

The second round of proofs came in this week and I made them available on Friday. The quality on these latest proofs is the same as the first set (which you might have already seen on Google+ or Facebook), but there are a couple more options. Here’s a…

How much of a genre should be gamified?

I’m working on an AW hack inspired by Aliens, DooM, and Event Horizon. A common archetype in these, and their heritage like Seven Samurai is the new kid and / or jackass.

But I can’t think of a way to make them an appealing player character. I can see someone wanting to play Ripley, Newt, Vasquez, Hicks and even Burke – but what’s the advantage to playing Hudson?

Listening to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP8dZdpXg90 – one of my favourite quotes is “the rules are a way of tricking people into telling a particular type of story”. This is something that comes across really strongly in story games too – as loose as their rules appear to be, things like Lovecraftesque and Fiasco absolutely guide you towards the right sort of story.
