I’ve run my fair share of mysteries, but ,lastly, I had difficulties with a specific situation.

A hunter tried to gather some intel about a victim. Where he lived, his habits , his acquaintances…

And the basic moves, like investigate a mystery, felt wrong.

The questions are linked to the creature, not the bystanders…

How do you handle this?

Act under pressure? Manipulate (if the hunter asks someone) ? A kind of act under pressure with sharp (if he googles it ^^). No rolls at all?

Thanks

Starting Strings PC<->Npcs

During the backstory phase, every player get to give and get some strings…Did you ever feel the need to bend the rules and grant some strings between Pc’s and some Npc’s they can’t ignore, right at the beginning?

For exemple:

Between the witch and her abusive Mother…

Between the Queen and his ex-boyfriend…

Between the Chosen and her Mentor…

I did my fair share of ‘wrong moves’ in Pbta Games.

I did my fair share of ‘wrong moves’ in Pbta Games.

I did my fair share of ‘wrong moves’ in Pbta Games.

But i’ve got a Monsterhearts game planned for tomorrow and I’d like to ‘do it right’

Hold steady is not ‘act under fire’.

So what should I do, for exemple, when the mortal is trespassing in a teacher’s office to steal some exams papers?

It’s a tense situation, but does it justify  to eventually gain the Condition terrified ?

Usually in Pbta games ,when a situation is not really covered by a move, I use a custom ‘act under fire’ move on the fly…

Maybe I shouldn’t.  Maybe that unusual action is not the focus of the game and we shouldn’t roll. We could go on with the fiction and threat the situation like a 7-9… with a price to pay.

One more 😉

Let’s say the Chosen is minding her own business, walking in the woods…

Her mentor carries out a surprise attack on her. That’s part of her training to stay sharp… Does she hold steady? Or lash  out  physically?

Thanks 😉

Grimace V2!

This rogue’s gallery was initially intended for sandbox games like Apocalypse World and its hacks.

Games where characters are created on the go. They are supposed to feel real and authentic.

With Grimace, you can pick a random face to inspire a whole character. Or you can choose a specific face

to fit a concept you already have in mind.Grimace is of course quite functional in traditional

games as well.

This is an ‘ongoing’ version ,uneven in quality, and with few rares duplicates.

I signed the files, since I ‘ve found earlier version of Grimace in unlikely places…

But those faces (before editing) come from various series and films or the web in general.

So I can’t plead for a proper copyright.

Have fun!

PS:I use it on several whiteboards during my hangouts. So it’s ‘low res’.

If that’s not enough for an IRL gaming table, let me know!

I’ve got a little question about the ‘interfere’ move on Apocalypse World 🙂 (Well, and some PbtA game aswell)

I dare to tag both Todd Nicholas  and Dana Fried  since i’m reading both of their amazing PbtA hack at the same time 🙂

On Pvp scenes, moves don’t need to be interfered every time… But sometimes it feels necessary.

And , on some case, I feel that the ‘interfere’ move falls flat. (While it works perfectly when you don’t use interfere for your own explicit safety)

Let’s take for exemple some good old asskicking between players. But a conflict significant enough for dices to be rolled.

While taking the initiative is still an embarrassing

advantage for a PbtA game. Getting a 7-9 as the defender doesn’t look like a ‘partial success’

« On a 7–9, you also expose yourself to fire, danger, retribution or cost. »

Well, when your intent is ‘not get punched/shoot in the face’ by the other player maybe it will be harder to plead for self defense later… but apart from that it’s difficult to figure a cost Innit ?

Moreover the rules are so lightning fast and smooth against the MC, that it’s a little dissapointing those same moves could be more tedious during PvP. (I roll against you, you interfere, than you roll against me and I interfere… etc etc )

When each players try to ‘Read/Manipulate/wipe out’ their opponent would it be possible to find an elegant alternative ?

Like a kind of move rolled on each side that cancels/completes each other out ?

I’m looking at you ‘engage in single combat’ from AW Dark ages 😉

Thoughts ?

(Yeah I know, Fan-boys are never satisfied!)
