Are there any updates to the rules since 1.1 / Sep 2013?

Are there any updates to the rules since 1.1 / Sep 2013? I’m running Urban Shadows tonight for the 2nd time.  It looks like the World of Darkness add ons are there now. They are compatible with the base game right? An aware won’t feel left out playing along side a mage?

  1. Hey Sean, V 1.1 was the last public playtest document released. The final version is now in closed playtest and will be released when the Kickstarter is completed.

As for the WoD hack, I would be hesitant to play an Aware next to a Vamp since they monsters seem to have a crap load more powers than mere mortals. Tommy Rayburn is really the best person to answer that though.

  2. As one of the people writing the WoD hack, I’d be a bit hesitant to use the hack alongside normal US. Not because they don’t mesh, but rather because there’s a lot of room for advancement in the hack that most mortal US characters just don’t have. Sure we have the Hunter add-on (which allows for even Tainted and Hallowed to advance into specific organizations), but the majority of the work has been in Vamp, Mage, and a bit of Wolf. Slasher plans to allow for any Mortality based playbook to advance from, but not everyone would want to play a serial killer.

When we finish our current goals in playtesting what we have and adding in Demon (a project I’ve stalled on as life stuff got in the way for now) and Changeling (a project I may join when I finish demon), I’ll see what I can do about perhaps making a Morality based add-on that isn’t a complete psychopath. Perhaps a psychic or something using one of the more obscure WoD supplements as a base for ideas. There’s a huge difficulty, however, in making a “one size fits all” advancement for Mortality, meaning that multiple add-ons would likely have to be made.

But then, WoD has this thing about being either a mortal-based horror game or a supernatural-based game built on various themes and moods, depending on what you’re playing.

  3. Sean Hess, I am glad you are interested and I can gladly send you docs as long as you understand we are constantly improving upon them. To add to John Layton’s point. We are looking at ways of adding more for non-Hunter mortals and I would LOVE to hear your suggestions.

We will also be reviewing the final docs from Andrew Medeiros once US is completed, because as John said currently they are not 100% compatible. Reasons: we have altered a few moves for balance purposes when you add in the new add-ons, we have a separate advancement chart, we are currently using some older move names (personal preference.) Once he is complete, I can determine a few pages that I will include in my doc that says X=Y, ect…

Until then, I am including an older version of US with the changes we have made.

  4. John Layton, we could do some kind of detective or something …. need to look at the plain WoD book and see if there is something we can fit for all mortals.

  5. I would love to be able to look over the rules in progress. It would help answer some questions I have about how to run things. You’ll email me or something?

Well, I think WoD isn’t really compatible with supernatural+mortals working side-by-side. Normally you all make the same type of character right? I’ve only ever played mage and everyone always plays a mage. That’s ok, but it would be different game than US.

  6. Sean Hess, The files are altering every few weeks. If you want something finished, well …. you have to wait a few months. If you want to just jump in, download the docks I sent and start playing. I will keep posting new updates as they get posted. For yourself and your players, you will just have to check the moves people have taken to see if they are updated.

Have you looked at the PDF’s sent? There is just a lot of material there, so it just takes awhile.

If you want to jump in with the writing process or the playtesting process …… I can speed things up.

Also, I may be putting together a side game (once a month to do some extended playtest outside my normal group …. interested?)

  7. I run an actual WoD game every so often with my friends, I allow them to use whatever type of character they want and while it can be interesting to get them to work together into a story, it’s the same idea with US. Why would a Vamp work with a Wolf or a King? Why would a Dragon work with a Fae or Tainted? All of the US and AW games I’ve played required players to choose different playbooks. Since the Add-on gives more options for specific playbooks to branch out, it actually allows multiple players to play the same “starting playbook” then branch out.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t like to see a Tainted based Lucifuge or something along those lines.

I’ve been tossing the idea around for a while and I may eventually do an add-on for Immortal since that’s kind of the odd one out along with Dragon (not sure how I’d do that one). While I can understand Tommy’s desire to get this done, my brain just doesn’t like stopping the idea flow at times.

  8. Shoot, I must have missed your last comment. Did you send me some PDFs? I didn’t get them. I just got your invite for tomorrow. I’ll be there!
