  1. I don’t know if it used to be more of a “real” thing, but in modern wrestling it’s basically an arbitrary designation made to push forward a feud for a title. Sometimes there’s a #1 contenders match to decide who becomes the contender, sometimes someone just comes out and the announcers start calling them the contender without any buildup.
