Hi there guys.

Hi there guys.

Hi there guys. I’m using the 2.0 version of the Archtypes for a game I’m runhning tomorrow. However, I noticed something. There’s no area marked for experience advances. There’s only a bar for corruption advances on the front. Is it on the sheet but hidden somewhere? Am I supposed to draw it on, or write it in Notes?

Exp is still a part of the game as far as I can tell. Or is it supposed to be a faster game, where each time you use a highlighted stat/faction you literally advance rather than gain xp, gaining new moves all the time?

Also, is the only way to advance in the game through factions, rather than stats? So you only advance, after engaging with each of the four factions? So if someone is obsessed with one faction, say a hunter going after vampires (night faction), he won’t advance unless he also uses contacts in Power and Spirit as well? Although I guess he could advance through corruption.

Would anyone mind helping me out? This would be a lot easier if the MC sheet was more detailed, rather than focus on names and weapon types. I only really have experience with Monsterhearts, so that’s my baseline.

  1. You only advance through Factions. Characters needs to engage with all four Factions, either by making Faction moves or by settling a Debt. (If someone cashes in a Debt, both parties mark the other’s Faction.)

Please keep in mind this is very, very early material. We’re working on a Quick Start guide for new MCs, but the final rules will have a ton more detail. Thanks for running! 😀

  2. Ok thanks for your quick response. I’m gonna have to go over the moves a few times to make sure it’s stuck in my head.

    One more question:

When making threats, you make them with the group right? You don’t make them secretly in advance. You ask them who they think runs this city, why, and add in the details. Like, “A witch Coven is an established member of the status Quo. People avoid messing with them, because they are neutral, providing mystical artifacts to everyone.”

What the players don’t know, and the MC adds secretly is, “The artifacts are made from the bones of Faries. But the Witches don’t want the Fairy Queens to hear about it.” So there’s what the group knows, who build the threats generally, and the individual plots the MC makes.

Have I got this right, or are threats supposed to be built completely differently? Cause I was mostly inspired by Fate Core for the idea of making threats, unless there’s a way I’m supposed to do it.

  3. You are correct – there is only advancement for interacting with each of the factions.  No other XP system.  There is also no highlighted Stat/Faction.  I have only played in one session like this, and in practice if encouraged the characters to interact more with each other and the NPCs.

It may require the MC to make sure the other factions are covered/available in order to make up for  players groups that are not well-divided amongst all of the factions.

  4. Chirag Asnani – I do both! Usually I don’t do anything in advance, but I add secret stuff to the threats they tell me about in the city, and I create new threats after the first session. 😀
