I picked up this game and can’t wait to run it for my players, hopefully this weekend. I did have a question about the roles. What is a provocateur and what examples are there of one? I am thinking that Donk is a good example of a Clown.

  1. Provocateur would someone like Golddust and Stardust or Jake the Snake, maybe even early Mankind.  Someone mysterious and creepy.

Clown is more of a comedy act.  Along the lines of Santino or Damien Sandow.  While Doink was literally an evil clown, he wasn’t necessarily a comedy act.

  2. Attitude Era Goldust is my number-one example, and to a (much) lesser extent Stardust. You could see “We The People” Zeb Colter in that role (playing on real right-wing nationalism as the core of the character). Some classic examples would be Adrian Adonis or Iraqi-sympathizer Sgt. Slaughter.

Anyone who visually stands out and plays on issues intended to hook into what the audience really finds uncomfortable.

  3. I just checked out Doink’s tvtropes page. Funny how people get better when you don’t remember them. And thanks for explaining the provocateur. I’m hoping that someone picks the manager playbook, but I know one player is likely to play a Michelle Rodriguez expy. What should I recommend to her?

  4. It depends how she enjoys playing, I suppose?

Is she quite familiar with wrestling?

Visually, I suppose she’s kind of like Lita, but rather than a high flier I guess she’d be a bit more like an Anti-Hero?

  5. She is actually. Surprised me when we just started talking about it. She tends to like playing the tough girl loner. In our L5R game she played a Dragon duelist and later a Unicorn Battle Maiden version of a Magical Girl.
