So, what style are you going after for generating the universe in Carta Galaxia?  Similar to Stars Without Number, Diaspora, or more collaborative PbtA style mechanics?

  1. I have two slightly conflicting goals with Carta. One is to provide a ready-made campaign setting, so that people can jump right in. The other is to provide modular tools to supplement existing campaigns, to provide inspiration and gap-fillers.

To tackle both, my current plan is to divide Carta Galaxia into quadrants. Each quadrant will be a self-contained mini-campaign setting, with its own factions, npcs and places of interest. The quadrants will represent very different game styles and power dynamics: core systems with many factions (high politics), war-zone with two primary factions (combat, us vs them), frontier (mix of exploration, colonization, politics and combat), and newly discovered space (exploration, few factions, alien contact).

Even as a write this, I realize that if I was a major publisher… I’m actually writing 4-5 supplements as a single one. Hah. Live and learn.

  2. It sounds like you may have to break the job into smaller parts.  Also, no sense in giving it all away at once if you can generate more money stream with an optimum distribution of things.  Describe them clearly and give people the chance to pick and choose less-expensive parts than the whole thing?  But don’t go too crazy with the number of supplements.

Have you seen how much stuff has been done for the “Clement Sector” for Mongoose Traveller?  It’s a bewildering variety of stuff, and you might pick up tips from their release schedule and the way they split their topics.
