Are there any good hacks out there that specifically cater to a Star Trek style of play? It seems like every space game I’ve seen is either geared towards playing Firefly, or sufficiently supports Firefly that that’s all people seem to do with it.

I mean, I like playing a constantly broke fringer as much as the next geek, but I’d like to play in a game where, by assumptions baked into the design, your crew has resources and legitimacy, the threats and complications are of a higher echelon, and there’s exploration to be done because you don’t need to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

Anything like that floating around?

  1. Uncharted Worlds.

Pick the Great Ship setting, an have everyone (or most everyone) take an Allegiance with Starfleet. Everyone will start with a Favor to begin with which can be cashed in for big shows of support, and the ship will be loaded with NPCs to recur during play, and especially loyal crews can be taken as Assets. The Wild Jump move is the default exploration move, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be less hair-raising if it suits your setting. The Interface basic move means everyone is computer-literate, just like Star Trek.

Yes, the game uses Cargo as a default method of handling financial exchanges, but that’s really only if your game is about finances. If your game is Star Trek-style, then you can lean hard on doing missions to earn favors that you spend to requisition what you need.
