I have been working on a Dungeon Starter style inspiration pack for Apocalypse World based on the Metro 2033 novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky

This Apocalypse Starter breaks a couple of the rules for AW, in terms of imposing some ideas on how the world works and proposing factions in the game, but certainly its a fun and appropriate world to run with the system.

Thanks to +Marshall Miller for the Dungeon Starter idea.

  1. I like it, it looks like a good, solid start. I appreciate that the custom moves cover all the stats except Hard, I think that’s good. I understand you’re borrowing the structure, but having those elements for themes, daily life, questions and impressions is also a big help.

    Now, actual feedback.

    Some additions to daily life:

    Eat: pre-Metro non-perishables

    Drink: pre-Metro alcohol

Smell: animal waste, rotting corpses, wood smoke, diesel smoke, yourself

Hear: machinery, men at work, hushed voices, echoes of trains, wind, music

See: ancient graffiti, distant lights, reflected eyes

When the ghosts of the dead seek seek out your life roll + Weird

    On a 10+

    – You shake off the effects and can act normally

    On a 7-9 chose one:

    – You pass out for some time, but gain insight. The MC will tell you something you don’t want to hear.

    – You stay upright, but the howling whispers invade your brain. Take -1 forward.

    – Visions and voices lead you astray. You’re now in a spot of the MC’s choice.

I’m not sure about Run Into The Darkness either. Maybe change “hopelessly lost and separated,” to “You escape the immediate threat only to find yourself approaching another”?

  2. Thanks for the help on the ghosts of the dead move, I was stumped on good ideas for that – those look solid and would be alot of fun in play. Maybe alter the -1 forward to -1 ongoing till you do something positive with your experience – that way it doesnt become the easy option.

Yeah I like the idea of meeting somethign worse tho I felt it was stealing too much from Monster Hearts. Still its a fun outcome which builds story usually.

Ill definitely add those daily life suggestions too.

  3. I guess I’m thinking the event “When the ghosts seek you” is more of a soft move. I try to be careful with Ongoing. How about instead it grants the MC 1-hold to Interfere at a time of their choice?

Edited previous post for clarity – a formatting error occurred.

  4. I like the sound of this. Maybe the Chopper/Driver could become a new custom playbook for the guys who run railcars or handcarts between stations. A smuggler or coyote (people smuggler) type.
