Hi! I have a question about custom threat moves in Apocalypse World. I know that they are supposed to be player-facing i.e. player activates trigger, x occurs to player. Because of this, I was concerned about whether this custom threat move would interfere with the paradigm of MC vs. PC.
When you try to read Eeedee’emm, the MC can ask you an equal number of questions from the list; Eeedee’emm knows the answer to these questions.
Sounds strong. I would want to make an unmistakable soft move to clearly telegraph that to the players, like seeing (excuse me) EDM turn the tables on a supplicant.
You can totally make custom MC moves.
One of the basic MC moves is “Make a threat move (from one of your fronts)”. Your fronts will/could contain custom moves for the front.
One example of this from an actual play is Adam Koebel making a front and a custom move (for AW 2nd ed). You can find the video at: https://youtu.be/7xiR7_zsvW4?list=PLTj75n3v9eTlCfRU_6v-afz-4uYsA14IF&t=1295 specifically the part is at 21:41.

Yoshi Creelman Thanks! I knew you could create custom threat moves, my question was whether my specific custom threat move was acceptably structured, because while it’s player triggered, the effect is actually on the MC.
So, I would keep the move and re-frame the description. Rather than “The MC asks”, say “eeedee’emm asks”
