  1. Hi Jennifer – There are a few similarities but we’re using our own version of the PbtA framework, as well as opening it up to other positions (e.g. The Chauffeur, The Cook). There’s also prying into each other’s secrets in order to gain leverage on one another while vying for recognition from the family.

So yeah. Kinda. But not. Not really. 🙂

  2. I love the theme David K., what mechanics or ideas are new to this over just being a retheme?

How are you achieving horror or mystery, being that usually those kind of shock elements fall flat?

  3. Hi Pedro – Yes, definitely. Although the Blackwoods are given as a “default”, we do give direction on how to customize the family and even the house.

  4. Hi Tommy – When I put this one together, a lot of different ideas were put together from various sources (Here’s where I talk shop, hope no one minds). One thing we ported over from Spirit of 77 was the inclusion of Rolling with Something Extra – (rolling with three dice and taking the best two). We really liked that originally because it lowered the flat (add +1) mechanic.

Another concept used is the idea of Prestige – Prestige represents the pecking order of the staff which can be used for different dice rolls and/or advancement. It’s similar in nature to “Heat” in World Wide Wrestling (which I recommend people try, even if you’re not a wrestling fan). This also plugs into the concept of Secrets, which is used similar in a fashion to Strings from Monsterhearts, but specify specific skeletons in the closet that people use against one another.

And finally, players also gain the option of a Cruel Move. Cruel Moves are automatic moves that players can do which cause trouble for everyone. In some ways, you can call them The Nuclear Option, not unlike opting to tell your work nemesis off on your last day on the job.

At start of play, players pick two character moves and their Cruel move. So it’s not that many.

  5. Sure, rooms in the House suffer the same issues as members of the Family in that they have “Troubles” that grow in intensity. Basically as part of the initial first session, the house is plotted out with the players (just like any other map in the PbtA milieu.)
