I have a question that is not about the rules, but just curiosity.

I ask me if Mike Pondsmith have played to The Sprawl (or looked it) ? Hamish Cameron, have you been in contact with him ? And if yes what did he think about your game ?

  1. It’s strange, because about cyberpunk thematic, The Sprawl gain in popularity. Maybe is it linked with development of the games “powered by apocalypse”. But your game is really good and feel the atmosphere that we could have on the old cyberpunk 2020, with a modern system. I’m surprise that Mike Spondsmith don’t have saw it. Especialy if we concider that the cyberpunk 2077 video games is on develop.

  2. This would get into games rivalry. You don’t expect the venerable inventor of a detailed game to worry about the new young pups on the block, do you?

What would you say is the character type-count in each game? Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0. had 9 Roles; The Sprawl has a number of character types fixed by the number of Playbooks. In Interface Zero 2.0 (available for Savage Worlds or Fate Core rule-sets and, soon, Pathfinder/Starfinder) they have some really wild “cyberpunk” character types like uplifted animals on two legs, and zeeks (psionics). There was some wildness in Mike Pondsmith’s sequel-game CYBERGENERATION, focused on young teens with powers who were something like student X-Men.

  3. I don’t thought about rivalry, because cyberpunk 2020 is an old game, that was very good in his years and a great tabletop game. For proof it has been traduct in french in his totality, in a period where RPG begin timidly to expanded but stay marginal. A lot of RPG game was in english / US.

But now… his system is old with lot of heavy stuffs like autofire management or the armor rating and the technologie in game is… outdated. I alway have hoped a new version, more modern, with a new system and more simplicity to be concentrate only on the story and not to the rules. The new version of D&D have do it with his 5th edition, but not not cyberpunk even if there had something more plaisant in the cybergeneration system with his simplicity (but not his X-mens profil). And I don’t speak about the V3, it doesn’t exist for me.

I have try Technoir, Interface zero, Nova praxis, Corporation but not of them satified me. The sprawl is a revelation. I don’t know if it’s the perfect Cyberpunk game what I need but for now I’m happy of all my parties that I played as player. Maybe it because the apocalypse system don’t focus mathematic statistics but more on the characters and their evolution into the world and their connexion. Maybe I don’t have any time to read manuals with lot of listing of weapons / cybernetics / Feats / Power / ….

I remember that character creation in Cyberpunk 2020 take long time. Spend points to increase skills or attributes was quick, but choose cyber / weapons / … was long and boring. With time and family life I don’t have time for that. It is why I take lot of interest with The Sprawl.

To return to the principal subject, I don’t find that it’s abnormal that a game’s concepter is looking to see what the others do.

  4. If I run into him, I’ll ask him if he’s familiar with it!

At BreakoutCon in Toronto this weekend, I plan to hang out with the creators of Headspace and The Veil, the other two published PbtA cyberpunk games (that I’m aware of).

The monofilament duels will be all in good fun 😀

  5. It’s true that The Sprawl is not the only pbta game about Cyberpunk. But I don’t know the others, but after seeing The Veil website, I think that it is more transhumanian game. Isn’t it ?

  6. Michael Notaro I haven’t played it or read it yet (I will this weekend), but that’s my sense of it.

All three games do slightly different things with the same core of source material.
