I am really looking forward to running an UW game but when we get together the character creation needs to be fairly quick. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to speed up creation so the dice can hit the table?

  1. Show up knowing what you want to run. Don’t build the entire game by committee. Show up and just straight up say “We’re playing a space station game, with these 6 factions.” Let the players supply details about these things, of course, but just make it clear what the game is going to be, and have the players build characters that fit your premise.

I printed out careers and origins as half sheets and just gave them to every player as handouts, rather than passing the book around. Similarly, I printed out the asset single page summaries.

  2. I considered printing them small and allowing the players to cut out their career skills and pasting them to the character sheet so the details would not have to be written out. Just a thought.

    Thank you by the way.

  3. If you and your players have time prior to the session, send the PDF out ahead of time and invite people to brainstorm character and faction ideas (either on the email chain, or have one or two ideas to bring to the table). Only really doable if everyone has time to spare outside of the session though.

  4. You could also use the playbook style pregens from the uncharted worlds website or make your own. The way it works is that you make some decisions for your players (origin and careers, provide three different stat distributions and a selection of skills, give them options concerning their looks, gear etc) and have them choose in the same way they would with playbooks in other PbtA games.
