Hey guys! Just starting up my Urban Shadows campaign and BOY was session 1 a blast!

I just want to ask two things about Faction moves.

1. If one player (The Wizard) is looking into some rumors about a character in Night who’s up to no good and Hits the streets to ask her buddy in Power about it – would that character know about it? Or should she hit up someone from the faction in question?

2. My players did the Start of session move and we had some trouble understanding if the different factions are united fronts or if they’re just like a social strata that consists of many opposing ideas and ideals. Do people from (for example) Night have conspiracies with someone from Mortality?

Thanks in advance!

  1. 1. “On a hit, they’re available and have stuff” – they know if the roll says they know. How much is up to you. It seems cool to figure out why this Power guy knows so much about Night!

    2. Up to you guys. In my game they were strata with different wolf packs being at odds with each other and all

  2. 1. Players are free to hit the streets with whoever they want, but if you as GM have doubts that certain NPC (no matter the faction) would have information you can say that this particular NPC probably doesn’t know or ask player ‘why would X know about that?’

I think it is very possible that members from other faction can have detailed information about other factions, but not all of them are know everything. If players for example created NPC to be a Vampire who is very protective, rarely leaves his hunting grounds he might not be in fictional position to know about recent events about Fae. Then you can have NPC who is an Aware private investigator or a Scholar who might know a lot about everyone else because the spy/deal with them.

    2. As you like. In my games faction are not unified, vamps are against wolfs, but sometimes ally with them, Wizards make deals with everyone, while Fae are vary rarely in league with Demons and Tainted.

Just as principle of the game says to show them united at times then very divided at time.

NPCs can also be using debts on each other, so every once in a while you can have someone do something for his enemy because they owe them, or someone be hunted by his faction for not paying debts etc.
