The base rules assume that whatever setting you use UW with uses Jump Drive with a specific move for Wild Jumps, and a limit to what size ships can have Jump Drives.

Has anyone used UW for a setting like Star Trek where even a small shuttle can reach warp speeds? Is it as simple as making Warp Drive a feature that can be added to a flyer. What, if anything, should replace the Wild Jump move.

I’m currently looking for a “lazy GM” system for running a Star Trek game. IE one that doesn’t require a huge amount of retrofitting to handle the various setting features (species, technology assumptions, and so on).

As an aside, will FBH/CG include any discussion or advice on such things like alternate FTL technologies.

  1. I don’t see any problem with having shuttles with jump drives. You’d probably want to add some more travel moves and things though.

Wild Jumps are part of TNG canon though, IIRV.

  2. “Upgrade” was the term I was looking for. Make “Warp Drive” an Upgrade for Flyers (vehicles). And as you say make it free for all starships is probably the easiest thing to do. The difference between “high warp” and “low warp” capable ships would probably just be narrative rather than mechanical.

  3. You can pretty much use Wild Jump exactly as it is. Its for when you’re going out exploring or going somewhere without a proper Jump Point… which, in the case of Trek, is more like going some place that hasn’t been properly scanned to find a proper course around stars and so forth. Same basic effect: you’re taking some risks by flying by the seat of your pants. Just drop all of the ‘nausea,’ ‘hallucionations,’ stuff because its for the specific type of grittier space opera that UW defaults to. Totally keep everything else, though. You’re intending to go through the Nebula to find the Xindi homeworld? Awesome, you rolled terribly, and now you’re in danger or you’ve found someother planet, etc etc.
