Hello! Welcome to Wednesday Night Game! I’m proud to bring to you our first recording of Masks! For those who are not familiar, Masks is a game about young Superheroes. I could take the time to try to explain it in exhausting detail, or I could place a…

Yesterday we had again a good session with masks.

Yesterday we had again a good session with masks.

Yesterday we had again a good session with masks. Less social drama this time and more young heroics and revealing the school mysteries.

We started with action in storage for film equipment where Janus was destroying some footage that was bad for legacy (he filmed the Legacy breing a bad actor and we took him failing his responsibilities for sabotaging the scene for the film) a lot of action with weather going supernaturally horrible and collapsing the set on PC’s and one of their school mates who they rescued. After the mayhem The Legacy was left for himself a bit as he was sufferibg a concussion while Janus took unconsious friend to safety and fetched help. Legacy had a visit from his older self – who instructed him, wanted him to safe a specific person and healed his wounds (the player played both sides telling what the panels show us and finally tried to reject his older selfs influence when he was told he needed to be less mundane – failing and becoming Angry to himsel(ves)) Afterwards they had some trouble on medical cabin as one nurse conspired to blame the kids for stealing drugs.

The roughed up kids were going to break into tesearch faculty where their friend was taken and they thought was goong through some horrible things – which made the weather act terribly. I decided to play a bit with their older selves who came to the island – saw terrible destruction and showed that Legacy was now Bull. They went diving into the research faculty – which was a ship that was sunk earlier – some time after the earlier timeline. They found out a lot about the research team, relics from other students and stuff about Janus’s mother and finally saw the horrible med labs the special kids were taken after they revealed their powers.

After this we shifted to the past – the kids tried to find a way to the ship in the terrible storm – were found by the school faculty and security and took to safety from the storm and questioned about the nurses accusations – after some talk they managed somehow to reject the influence of the nurse – to shut up on accusations and thought that the adults will handle the drug stealing villain – and again reject the influence of the campus security and leave the house and return to the storm.

They took a boat and managed (with superhuman effort) to get to and into the research boat where they followed the same road as their future selves – encountering a extremely dangerous member of the research team and sneaked behind him through high tech security (force fields) – until they enter a conference room with full research team. Legacy tried to save them from notice but failed – our Lex Luthor style villain then turned and took them down quickly.

We cut to day later and the kids start again remember something what is going on. They have power tampering devices on them and both have some Label changes made to them through horrific mind control tubes. The devices don’t naturally work for them as their powers are from other source that the school is studying – players were happy as they managed to try to help their friends (who are also out with their powers tampered), they could learn a lit about the school mysteries – and found out more mysteries about meteorites, test machinery and the coming destruction – and still keep the school intact and the school life going. And our Legacy is now Bull. 🙂

Next session (maybe ens of June or early July) will be halloween and we see some romance and drama. 🙂

Finally got masks to the table.

Finally got masks to the table.

Finally got masks to the table. We were a bit awkward to start. I think a lot of that had to do with my players unfamiliarity with PbtA games. We hit our side, and had a good amount of fun. All the questions helped set the story, that was super helpful.

Our intrepid youths threw down against The Iconoclast, and sent her packing. They almost (intentionally?) let their egotistical principal die.

My favorite moment was convincing The Bull to get over his condition by claiming the glory. Evil GM points.

My players’ favorite was Rip and Tear, a brother and sister with quantum teleportation powers from the silver age. Their powers are a bit unstable, and they tend to suddenly swap places with each other.

(Note: we used the bare bones rules from way back.)

I just finished my first game of Masks. My group were:

Quick Shot aka Todd. A Beacon who saw heroes in action and started using his archery skills for superheroism. The football coach/mentor of the team doesn’t believe he’s up to the task. He likes Amelia and his parents adopted Tom.

Dr. Amatic aka Amelia Rate. A Doomed who was experimented on by Medi-Evil, a mad scientist who wants to Moreau people. She is attracted to Tom and Tito, but not Todd who she sees as a sibling (ouch! Right in the adolescence!)

Tito Vasquez aka Vibez (named by Todd). A Delinquent who doesn’t like the others but has to stand up for his kind.

Tom Hart. A Bull and jock whose mother gave him to Medi-Evil for experiments. He was saved by his dad who died in the rescue. He likes Todd but had difficulty showing it in the session

It was a really fun game, although I think we’ll do better now we know how the influence economy works. We had a couple of hours so we did character creation and a scene at a mall with a pair of villains:

Girl Huntsman was a military sniper once saved by a Golden Age villain. She took his name when he was killed by a superhero and declared war on powered heroes. She was dressed as an insurance-selling tiger in the mall and nearly set off a power-suppressing bomb.

Then there was Pillbug Pete, a man in giant woodlouse-themed armour who was robbing a bank. He rolled through the floor, buried people and was ultimately pitiful.

In fighting these guys, Vibez was affected by several of his own emotion blasts, fled the mall and remained outside so it seemed like he meant to leave. Dr. Amatic got a text mid-heroic monologue and replied to it, too (damn kids). Everyone made fun of Quick Shot’s ice arrow and ignored that his bola-arrow tripped Pillbug Pete. Good times and hopefully there will be more games including the deadly Medi-Evil!

Everyone’s hanging at the base.

The Delinquent and the Bearer hooked up last week. The Delinq, who’s known the Legacy since 2nd grade, asks why he doesn’t have a girlfriend yet.

“Oh, my dad says I can’t; it distracts me from my duty.”

They laugh at him, which makes him insecure.

Later that night, Legacy loses control of his powers, snuffing all light within 3 city blocks and sending him off to the shadow dimension.

No more teasing after that.

So enjoying our Masks game and our recent issue especially, definitely my favorite of vol 2.

Yesterdays session was seventh monthly session with Masks, with about 8 hours per session that means that the system has handled itself fabulously for about 56 hours of superhero action 🙂

Labels and conditions work really well and no one is bored on them. Moves seem to work well still – tho’ one player seems bit uneasy with access situation options – and feels something is missing.

Our npc cards are a great help an having school inhabited by names amd faces really brings forth the experience. Its easy to say that Jill and Rival are gathering woods near the camp and Emilia walks alone – seemingly upset about something – drawing character to two social situations.

Extremely excited to see the official school stuff later – and I do hope I get an opportunity to test playing Masks in GenCon myself (even if I’m bit nervous as I’m not a native English speaker myself) .

Just did a session as RE:VOLT, alias Naryita Narang, the Delinquent.

Just did a session as RE:VOLT, alias Naryita Narang, the Delinquent. It’s amazing what a high Superior and Freak can do: whatever your powers can’t solve you can examine and provoke into submission. It’s so Magneto it’s fantastic. Why attack directly or defend when you can exhort your teammates to bring about your vision?
