This character was drawn for an Atomic Robo rpg game, but Dr Orbimund Nephalia would suit masks as well… probably with a less silly origin story, though.

He is indeed, a spider-mutant super-science villain who focuses on Material Sciences and wearable robotics.

(… and is totally a spider scientist from the spider dimension that got bitten by a radioactive fashionista, becoming human sized and shaped in the process…)

This is a single-page charsheet / moves reference sheet — it groups the moves together by what label you roll for them and what condition affects them, as well as having space to write your labels’ current values and check off what conditions apply.

I might run some Masks at Kublacon this weekend, and finally got this to where I’m happy sharing it.

Out of curiosity, is there a policy on selling third party things for Masks? I have a couple of things for Monster of the Week and wondering if I should similarly offer my Feral playbook.

Dear Skele-Girl,

on your way home from the precinct, all of these happened:

– a piano fell towards your head.

– a firefight between to rivaling gangs started, just when you were crossing the street, catching you in the cross fire.

– a train rushed toward you; the traffic lights were malfunctioning.

– the milk was sour, when you came home.

Tell us what of these might kill you and if so, how you escaped. If you were threatened by more than half:

– Mark a condition, take experience, shift Mundane up another label down.

Otherwise:

– Shift danger up and another label down.

Love, your GM.

I am running a game where players are attending the so-called Rook Academy (a bid by Rook to indoctrinate young supers), and created this move to create some more detail on their relationships with their peers and instructors (see below).

Now my debate is this. In my next session, the heroes will face off with a villain whose technology is similar to that of Hardware, a Rook-allied adult hero. This is a fact they can exploit in the fiction to overcome the villain. I thought it would be cool if this comes to their attention via a flashback to one of their classes. I thought about adding this to the move as an option as a “flashback” hold type mechanic. But do I trust that someone at the table is going to make that roll and take the option, or do I just add that for free to force the issue?

The move

At the Rook Academy, you are publicly trying to learn, but secretly keeping an eye on the practices of Rook Academy. How does this go?

There are many instructors at Rook Academy, but a few stand out. When attending class at Rook Academy, choose one instructor that was particularly influential to you:

Shadowblade – A black man who appears to only have a black wardrobe, with the ability to conjure weapons out of shadow. Always very serious and dour. Sort of scary.

Bastion – He looks like a stereotypical eccentric science professor with pale skin and frizzy gray hair except for the chrome boxes protruding from his balding scalp. Has a genius level intellect and psychic powers.

If you chose Shadowblade, roll + Superior.

If you chose Bastion, roll + Freak.

On a 7-9 choose one. On a 10+, choose two:

– Gain insight or learn a secret about your instructor. They lose influence over you.

– You ingratiate yourself to your instructor. You gain influence over them.

– You and another Rook student (choose one or create a new one) form an accord to get by in the class; describe how. You gain influence over them. If you already have influence over them, instead describe how your experience affected you; shift the chosen label up and any other label down.

On a miss, you cross your new instructor in a bad way; describe how. Mark a condition, and the GM will shift your labels.
