When a hero puts a condition on a villain, is the response a hard or soft move?

Ex: Jaguar Jr hits Toymaster with a clubbing blow (10+), sending him into a stack of boxes (making him Insecure). Toymaster brings in the Lifesize Nutcracker Robots: Do they immediately shoot a hole in the wall, endangering the factory, or is it more fair to say they Charge Up Their Eyelasers and ask RePete what he does next?

I decided to write up a playset for Masks inspired by works like Tiger & Bunny and Ratman. Essentially, a world of heroes that is run by and centers around corporations. I decided to bother some ideas from Nathan D. Poeletta’s World Wide Wrestling to add a new dimension to the game.

I tried my best to make the playset play back into the concept of finding yourself by trying to establish that the corporation you work for takes away your identity (your own hero logo) for their own and, on top of the other alterations, a custom, adult move allows you to take your logo back.

It definitely isn’t perfect, or even good,  and any feedback is appreciated.

Hey Brendan Conway, are you sure that Protege move should work that way?

Hey Brendan Conway, are you sure that Protege move should work that way?

Been reading the files:

When you encounter a superpowered being…

As written this move would trigger EVERY time you met anyone that has superpowers, including your teammates. Even when you define encounter as “first time” it would still trigger not only on villains but on every superhero you met as well. Seems too disruptive in gameplay.

Suggested fix:

When you encounter a superpowered being for the first time in play, you may roll+superior.

The move would also get a lot out of the Spout Lore clause, i.e.

“The GM might ask you “How do you know this?” Tell them the truth, now.” to add a bit of fictional explanation to the whole study thing. There is a difference between Robin pulling stuff from the Batcomputer, Batgirl checking her internet database while fighting the threat or Squirrel Girl pulling out villain trading cards etc.

The GM might also ask what history their teacher has with the superpowered being etc.

If you have a custom move to share for the MASKS rpg, feel free to make a post! It’s part of their kickstarter campaign, in the Jailbreak List, we need 10!

To Start us off:

Protege Move

“Know Your Enemy” – If you got a hit on an opponent with ‘Been Reading the Files’ you may roll + Superior to Directly Engage for the rest of the fight.

I have noticed some of the playbooks are (obviously) geared towards heroes. I have altered one move for 5 playbooks to represent a more maniacal bent.

Janus – Replaces “I’ll Save You!”

“It Was Me All Along!”

When you reveal your identity to an NPC or PC you have been misleading roll Mundane, on a 10+ you choose 2, on a 7-9 choose 1.

– This person gives you Influence over them.

– This person gives you Influence over someone else.

– This person won’t stand in the way of your plan.

– This person blurts out a secret of some important person.

Legacy – Replaces “Fight the Good Fight”

“Open the Gates of Abaddon”

When engaging a mob or group of mooks you may roll with Savior instead of Danger to directly engage a threat. On a 10+ they disable the leader and most of the mob/mooks. On a 7-9 they get the same but must expose themselves to consequences, put the team in danger, or take -1 Forward on their next roll.

Outsider – Replaces “The best of them”

“On My Homeworld” (Honestly just a rewrite)

When you tell a teammate that on your planet they would be dredges, slaves, or otherwise useless and they should be lucky to be on Earth use Freak instead of Mundane to reinforce their self image.

Transformed – Replaces “I am not my body!”

“Lilith’s Delights”

When you see an NPC is repulsed by you or a PC tries to change your self image, you may reinforce your monstrosity to them. Roll Freak and on a 10+ clear a condition or gain Influence over that person. On a 7-9 choose one but also face unforeseen consequences or infuriate a person with means to do you and/or your team harm.

Beacon – Replaces “Won’t Let You Down”

“Better Than Normal”

When you ignore an NPC or innocent in favor of seeing to a teammate first, add 1 to the Team Pool before you roll to interfere with that teammate.

Boom, shaka and or laka.

I’m doing my part for the mission by sharing a custom End of Session Move for Magpie Games  ‘s Masks RPG, in which you toss those boring old superheroes for a scene and play government bureaucrats talking about superheroes! I definitely have my finger on the pulse of what’s exciting about RPGs.

In all seriousness, as most of the End of Session moves are about you declaring how your characters’ relationships have shifted over the course of the game, this Custom Move, “D.A.T.A. Meeting,” is directed at your character’s relationship with the authorities. However, instead of defining it through a GM move or through your own descriptions, it’s done through the eyes of NPCs, with a bit of randomness thrown in to reflect that the authorities aren’t as monolithic as youthful heroes often perceive them to be….

All custom moves in PBTA games come with a handout, a worksheet and 3 pages of instructions, right? Right. #masksrpg   #halcyonjailbreak
