Last Saturday I started a 13-session online run of Monster of the Week called Agents of FAUST. Here’s the pitch:

“Most people believe that the universe works the way their eighth grade science textbooks told them: there’s a set of immutable laws governing our world that we basically understand. And for the most part, they’re right. The Federal Agency for Unorthodox and Supranormal Threats deals with those instances when those universal laws are more, well, mutable. Because the sad truth is that there ARE gods and ghosts and aliens and things that go bump in the night (and day) of all shapes, sizes and temperaments. As agents of FAUST, you are the point of the spear, protecting all those innocent citizens from things they really, really don’t want to know about, much less deal with.”

Initial – The Spooky

Acacia Tanaka

The daughter of a yakuza assassin and an unknown, potentially otherworldly man (suspect was Hades). She did her best to stay out of the affairs of her family and generally only got into adventures due to the demands of the ghosts that knew she could see them. Or friends that knew of her powers.

Charm -1 Cool -1 Sharp +2 Tough +0 Weird +2

Moves

The Sight

Hex

Jinx

The Dark Side

Secrets

Hallucinations

Mood Swings

Advances

Take a Mundane move: Always the Victim (the campaign started with the other players snatching her out of work after driving through the library wall and from there she spent lots of time being kidnapped by one group or another, her family included)

Take a Spell-slinger move: Third Eye (seeing ghosts was constant but the sight by DF terms was a thing)

+1 Weird

+1 Cool

Take a Spooky Move: The Big Whammy

Change playbooks – spell-slinger (since our original sorcerer dropped out, Acacia upgraded from minor ectomancer to full sorcerer.)

Drop the Dark-side. Drop the Big Whammy for Combat magic

Combat Magic – Wall, Necromantic/Spirit, Earth/Magnetism (wasn’t a necromancer by DF terms but people thought she was)

Tools and Techniques – Foci (Phurba ritual knife and spirit bell), Gestures, Incantations (Sanskrit)

Not my fault ( said this so often it became an aspect )

Practitioner – enchant paper spell charms and paralyze foes

Go big or go home.

Advance

Take another combat magic pick – Blast.

Spell-slinger move – Advanced Arcane Training

Looking for some feedback, and hoping that the literary nerds here could lend a hand. I’m going to run a game based on authors living in 1910 hunting supernatural creatures. Each author will have a class assigned to them for the players to choose from. What do you think of my pairings? Are their any authors I would kick myself for missing? And if this were a TV show what would you call it?

Mark Twain – The Wronged (An old man seeking revenge for the loss of his team)

H. P. Lovecraft – The Expert (Like Giles in Buffy, someone who knows about spooky stuff)

Victor Appleton – The Mundane (An ordinary guy who knows how to deal with the ordinary world

Langston Hughes – The Divine (A man in conflict with his religion, but who gains power from it none the less)

Daschiel Hammett – The Crooked (A kid with criminal skills)

H. G. Wells – The Chosen (Like Buffy in Buffy, a man given power to battle by destiny)

Agatha Christie – The Professional (Someone with an array of combat skills)

Katherine Ann Porter – The Flake (A conspiracy theorist who sees the secret world)

Zitkala-Sa – The Initiate (A woman well connected with the resources of a shadowy organization)

Beatrix Potter – The Spooky (A woman with strange psychic powers from a dark origin)

Dorothy Parker – The Spell Slinger (Much like Harry Dresden, a wizard of some skill)

Virginia Woolf – The Monsterous (A werewolf who works for our side)

A bit of a rules question, if it’s okay to ask: How does changing your Hunter to a new type interact with improvements? Do you start with a clean set of unticked boxes? Do only some of them reset? Do you keep all of them ticked, performing some weird translation where the improvement lists between 2 playbooks don’t match up?

If you don’t know, this is a playbook Linda Codega and I designed based on Monster of the Week teams like Josie and the Pussycats, and Jem and the Holograms. Have fun!

Going to be running our first session soon and I’m unsure about monster damage levels. How much harm is a good amount for a monster to do? I know reaching 4 harm is nearing hospitalization, but I don’t know what to expect from hunter armor or other abilities. Is 3 harm too much for a single attack? What are some examples of attacks and their relative harm. Thanks!

Hiyo,

If just started keepering for a group of friends and although we have played other RPGs we are all new to MotW. Just wondering if someone could give me a run down of how first aid works. We have a Wronged character with a first aid move, but that is the only reference we could find for it in the playbook. Is there a specific first aid system/ healing system?

Thanks in advance
