I’m working on a set of playbooks, currently for my Patreon, that I’m calling the Doomed Trinity – each playbook has a countdown clock that’s ticking away to their ultimate, unavoidable doom, but they get to make their mark on Apocalypse World while they can. All three have been inspired by actual play instances in the games I’ve been a part of, so much so I’ve always thought “These could be playbooks”, so, that’s what I’m doing.

The one I’m currently focused on is The Infected, basically some kind of plague carrier. Since it’s a carrier, I’m deciding on ways for it to spread the disease/infection.

Why don’t people just shoot the Infected on sight? Well maybe they chose:

Death Blossom

If your life becomes untenable due to the direct actions of another character, and you choose to die, give an infected move to any player characters involved and fill in a segment on their infection countdown. The MC will determine what happens to any NPCs involved and it won’t be pleasant.

And for the sickophiles:

The Infected Special

If you and another character have sex, erase one segment from your infection countdown and give them an infected move; they also mark experience.

Is this too terrible?

Night Witches: Character Concepts the Return

So a while back I wrote some character concepts for Night Witches.  You can find those here .  Essentially they’re characters I came up with after an initial glance at the prompts in the Night Witches playbooks.  I’ve been wanting to write a continuation to…

MAN! is it difficult to avoid the walking band aid!

Does anyone know of alternative playbooks for the Cleric class?

The new issue of Codex is out, featuring a playbook I wrote called The Kawaii!!!, in case you badly needed a BABYMETAL/Apocalypse World mashup, which, of course you do.

(Yes, there is a move called Gimme Chocolate)

Codex – Joy is now available!

We have just launched the first issue of Codex Volume 2, which means there is no better time to check out our zine! Here is a breakdown of what you will find in Codex – Joy:

Bunk Beds

Codex has become a great place for intensely creative, short-form LARPs, and Joy continues that tradition with this game by Adam McConnaughey. It’s about kids having a sleepover, whispering in the dark about their lives, and scaring each other with “true” stories of the supernatural. Occasionally, one of them falls silent. It features whimsically creepy art by Evan Rowland.

So You’re Becoming a Dragon

This short LARP by Wendy Gorman was one of my favorite entries from the 200 Word RPG Challenge. It’s about a young tenderwing consulting with a dragon about making the transition to adulthood. Puberty and dragons, together at last! It features an adorable illustration by Emily Griggs.

The Kawaii!!!

The Kawaii!!! is a new playbook for Apocalypse World, based on the real-life Japanese band, Babymetal. The Kawaii!!! is all about having fun, eating candy, and rocking out! This playbook was written by Oli Jeffery and features art by Jesse Ross.

Seven Celebrations

This is an extended Dungeon World feature that contains seven festivals and fetes for you to drop into your game. The celebrations include: The Festival of Ma’ayahla by David LaFreniere, My Big Fat Ork Wedding by Paul Edson, The Becoming by Logan Howard, The Feast of Fools by Kate Bullock, The Day of Stories and the Crowning of the Teller by Daniel Fowler, The Mountain’s Dream by Lowell Francis and The Last Vintage Before the Long Winter by Slade Stolar. It features art by Claudia Cangini and Vandel J. Arden (Vandel’s art can be seen in the cover image below).

Gauntlet Daddies #001

In which we are introduced to the glorious, full-color Gauntlet Daddy, including helpful (and sexy) biographical information. Gauntlet Daddy was illustrated by Fabrissou.

Three Dozen Attractions at the Carnival of Dreams

This months’s dreamy, wondrous, frightening miscellany takes its inspiration from books like Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Night Circus, and TV shows like Carnivale and American Horror Story: Freak Show.

This month’s cover illustration was by Vandel J. Arden. The excellent layout was by Oli Jeffery. Editing was by myself and David LaFreniere.

I just finished tinkering with a 2nd edition version of my favorite playbook I ever wrote: the Dog – https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9cu0IVYfHtiN3gzTHFQS1YxNjQ

I’m not entirely happy with this 2nd edition version because I loved the 1st edition version, however some of the changes to the rules have allowed me to tinker with aspects of the playbook that I think are much improved. Still, I have my own criticisms but I’m curious to hear what others think of it, whether they hate it or love it or whatever. Please let me know what you think!

For reference, this playbook is meant to mimic Blood, the psychic dog character from Harlan Ellison’s A Boy And His Dog novella and short stories.

The sixth installment in the series of supplements for Dungeon World describing an alternative sci-fi setting called The Continent Adrift. The voice of the narrator comes across very strongly in this one, perhaps too strongly? I enjoyed the hell out of writing in that voice though!

50 years ago, the enemies of humanity unleashed a psychic weapon that destroyed all hope for the future. Anticipating the attack and its outcome, a clandestine military project rushed to evacuate Earth. They built secret orbital stations and expanded the hidden Mars base into a functional colony. Their grandchildren – you – grew up dreaming of blue skies and blue seas that no longer exist.

Today, the mission to reclaim Earth begins.

The landfall marine has access to the most powerful weapon system in Apocalypse World, but is caught in a struggle between assimilation and the horrifying and violent mission to reclaim the world for their superiors. Warning: whichever way this plays out, if anybody’s playing a landfall marine, the reclamation mission will be an unignorable central feature of your game.

This is, yes, an update and adaptation of the 1st Ed Space Marine Mammal, except human. I think it worked out well. It brings to the forefront some of the more serious tensions in the playbook, that playing a dolphin didn’t really showcase.

It also includes something new to Apocalypse World, which I find pretty exciting: an MC’s guide to go along with the playbook, with rules, threats, and MC moves for creating the rest of the reclamation mission.
