The Dying

“The Dying is suffering from a non-communicable, debilitating disease that is slowly destroying them. They may or may not be aware of their ultimate demise, but what they are aware of is the symptoms of it. Although their condition also grants them boons, they will succumb to it eventually. There is no cure but there may be hope, grace, or whatever you may wish to find at the end of your tale.”

I figured it’s time for a preview of the soundtrack album, since Cascade is going to be ready very soon. Apologies the track is unmastered, but the full double album will be finished, mixed and mastered this month.

Kickstarter backers will already have heard The Apparatus preview in a recent update but i wanted one to go here too. There’s a big mixture of soundtrack music both ambient and more structured as well as cyberpunk soundscapes.

Hope you like it, I’ll keep you posted about the full album’s release, which will contain a track for each of the 18 Veil+Cascade Playbooks, plus 5 ambient cyberpunk environments. There will also be a ‘deluxe’ soundtrack version with an additional 5 environment soundscapes available to Cascade backers who choose it as an add-on to their pledge.

I have some exciting announcements!

Samjoko Publishing is going to be pretty dang busy this year, and as such, deserved a proper website. So here it is: Samjokopublishing.com

We have e-commerce integrated so people can buy from us directly on the official website, and that’s where you’ll be able to find our products in the future. We have a newsletter and a newsfeed, which will be updated with our projects as they unfold, but even in the busiest times, we want to keep it to once a month for updates, whenever possible. When the second printing of both The Veil and the first printing of Cascade are done, internationally there’s no better way than to get it from us.

Domestically IPR will carry our products and you’ll be able to nab our stuff at conventions and any shops that IPR may distribute to.

Kyle is hard at work on Operators.

I’ve got my Patreon for Uncanny Echo, a serialized roleplaying game. I’ll be working on book 3 of The Veil, and a couple other projects.

Lastly, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who supports us, it means a lot. It really, really does. Without people’s enthusiasm, I would not have so much energy to pour into these upcoming and current projects.

If you’re keen you may have noticed, for instance, that I’m going to be playtesting a hack of Blades in the Dark, tentatively called Hack the Planet, where players will be a rag-tag storm troupe in a cyberpunk future where the world has gone to shit due to global warming (and other problems). I could not be more excited to have folks come chase twisters and hack weather with me!

Hope the new year finds everyone well, thank you again, folks!

Hello, punks!

Hello, punks!

Hello, punks!

DrivethruRPG update went live. It’ll be the last one most likely, as we are gearing up to do the print run. From the last update, the most noticeable change is a lot more art. A new cover and 12 more pieces of art where the little playbooks were, which didn’t help at all. Instead, I made those steps in the order they appear on the playbook and added full-page spreads.

Additionally, The Empath’s Charge Object is refined, The Wayward’s playbook, in general, is more intuitive, Anchors in particular. More language has been peppered throughout to help people out, more links to page XX where needed.

I can’t wait for the print run, which will be happening along with Cascade!!

My group has played about 5 sessions.

My group has played about 5 sessions. We’re really enjoying the playbooks and have been able to build a very cool world using the game.

One take away I’m feeling from GMing this versus other PbtA is that some of the moves feel too forgiving or easy. Usually it’s the choose 2/3 moves.

For example in AW a 10+ gets you everything you want, while a 7-9 is a success, though you might wish you could have had more. In The Veil I’ve found that a 7-9 gets you everything you could have ever wanted (and sometimes more), while a 10+ my players often have a hard time choosing a third option because two was plenty. Ducking away from trouble with divert and neutralizing a threat with a 3-4 harm weapon are obvious examples.

On the one hand I don’t mind my players feeling like super heroes, on the other hand, even super heroes have to make tough choices. Anyone else feeling this way, or am I missing something?

The newest update on Cascade went out last night. If you’re a backer, check it out; there’s some stuff to download!

Things are looking good timeline wise, as we are in editing and slotting it into layout as we go!

Hi, I am a little confused by the way emotion spikes are meant to work – on p. 40 it is stated that “every time you ROLL that state, you mark a bubble on it.” (emphasis mine). But some playbook examples seem to imply that you mark a bubble even when a move is triggered that does not require a roll of the dice. So my question is: what causes an emotion spike – rolling the dice or triggering a move, even if no dice rolling is involved?

So I realize that mechanically and tonally this isn’t exactly the purview of The Veil, but I was inspired by Friends at the Table’s Twilight Mirage run, where they’ve been playing in more of a straight up space faring, sci-fi kind of universe, rather than a cyberpunk one, and I’ve been imagining doing something similar– setting the game in something like a Star Wars x Gundam x Destiny science-fantasy setting.

I’ve been looking at the rules for vehicles and mecha in the back of the book and wondering if people had any idea for how to combine those two optional rulesets in a way that bridges the apparent power gap between them? The mechs getting at least a +6, up to a +11 to damage, and likewise at least 6 armor seems to put them way out of reach of any other vehicle, weapon, etc. in the book– the best any sort of smaller personal vehicle could have being 2 armor.

What would people suggest doing for building other types of military type vehicles in a sci fi setting in a way that seems logical and consistent with the mechs? For example, how would you build out something like a hovertank, helicopter, personal starfighter (X-wing type thing), Millenium Falcon-esque ship, etc. in a way where even the smallest mech frame wouldn’t seemingly just completely overpower them in one go?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Just did an update clarifying Sling in the 2nd Printing and there was an option on The Empath playbook’s Gear section that, when exported on InDesign, grouped two options together apparently?

I exported it again and it seems OK now from the download of the file from DrivethruRPG.
