Would there be much of issue in US if the faction for certain archetypes were changed? The Faction moves/score seem to import a sense of alliance between archetypes of the same Faction.. I am tempted to move Tainted to Night Faction and Wolf to Wild Faction to allow for a war between Vampires and Werewolves type storyline.

Last night I started the groundwork for a Urban Shadows campaign with my two teen daughters. I pitched it being like The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures books. Last night was character creation and setting creation. I realized that the debts statement were great for making NPCs.

My eldest made a hunter named Beatrice and her sister made a fey named Fiona.

I even bothered to make a site for it on Obsidian Portal: https://new-york-nights-2.obsidianportal.com

Going to try and run a one shot this Friday. I have an idea of what I’m gonna do. I wanna know what you guys think would be a good city or place to run it in.

I know it’s really hard to play one shots using Powered by the Apocalypse but I wanted to see how it would turned out. Granted I’ve never GM’ed this game before. I’m really excited to try it out.

Thanks for your input

Question: I know that this game is mostly designed for city settings (hey it’s right there in the name) but how would you guys think it would work to do a bunch of closely grouped suburban towns (I’ve got SO MANY threat ideas for the NJ shore… SO MANY)? Has anyone tried this kind of set up? Does it screw up game dynamics horribly?

Oh man, these are hot.

In order to get experience you have to mess around with every faction, generating plot? Excellent.

New debt stuff? Way clearer. And the refuse to honor a debt is going to make players squirm.

The only thing I’m not sure about is the way your faction scores go up and down. First, I think you should explicitly cap it at some point— max +3 seems logical. Second, UF protagonists tend to collect knowledge, pull and influence almost as quickly as they collect magical powerups. I feel like there ought to be some way to increase one without decreasing others. Maybe that’ll be handled in the playbooks?

Musings on Debt.

Musings on Debt.

Something about the way Debts are phrased seems to confuse me, because it’s nothing like how we talk about owing people. I think things like “If you cash in a Debt you have with them” would be clearer if they said “If you cash in a Debt they owe you”.

“Take a Debt against X” is even less clear. It seems to mean “X owes you a Debt” but it’s a really awkward construction.

There’s a couple of specific instances where I’m not clear on the intent, though.

If you get mixed up in another PC’s affairs, you can cash in a Debt to get a 10+ (and give them a +1 or a -2). I can see the rationale for cashing in a debt to give someone a penalty: “I don’t owe you anything, you nearly got me killed back there!” But if I decide to help them out instead, they still wind up owing me less? I’m not sure how that is supposed to work in the fiction or the rules.

Another debt question, from The Hunter: “When you reset your Mortality Faction score, take a Debt against all Mortals in play (if any), otherwise mark experience.”

Since NPCs can be mortal and owe you a Debt I’m not 100% sure what “in play” covers. Active as PCs? Major NPCs? Is this one Debt that can be used against any Mortal, or do you get a debt against each Mortal?

Tim Franzke, I saw a few people talking about how to get XP (I am assuming AW new players,) curious on your opinion…

Tim Franzke, I saw a few people talking about how to get XP (I am assuming AW new players,) curious on your opinion if you preferred the AW method of highlighted stats, the DW method or the AW:Dark Ages method? I am guessing US though in it’s final stages isn’t 100% designed, so this mechanic could possibly be affected.

I added the AW:DA method quite easily into my game of US, I have quite enjoyed it.

“Mark experience by filling in one of the little experience bubbles on your character sheet when you use any basic, faction/rapport, corruption, debt or archetype/add-on move with that move counting only 1 time towards XP during that advancement.

When you gain 6 experience, then advance and erase your marks.

There are two exceptions to this rule: the moves Spellcasting and the move Fae Magic. You do not receive experience when you use those particular moves, but will gain XP each new spell or faerie power you use.

Certain moves / traits designate additional experience when activated, giving direction on how and when such experience is gained.”

I think I’ve been conditioned to think of vampire society in the WoD way with princes, etc.  I don’t know about anyone else.  Perhaps it is really just semantic.

Still, in thinking about this, I also tried to think up alternate ways that a vampire society has been presented.  One set of books that has done that is the Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston.  The books have a map of New York that shows how the vamps have their territories broken down.  Some work like hippie communes, some like mafia, and some like monks.

It’s a pretty good series for another look at vampires and vampire culture.

Anybody in Calgary, Alberta, or surroundings, that would like to pool resources to save on shipping? If we can get 5 together, we can order the Mayor level for $22 each instead of the $35 each of the Mixed Up level.
