Here’s a little thing I’ve been working on over the past few months. It’s my first attempt at making/hacking a TTRPG, so on top of not being done, I’m sure it’s also somewhere between horribly bad and halfway decent. That said, it’s at the point now where I’d need some play experience to tell what works, what doesn’t, and what exactly needs to be added, and unfortunately I’m not at a point right now where I can get it to a table personally.

With all that being what it is, I’m sharing it here. Feel free to take a look at it or not, as you’d like. You can leave advice or feedback if you want, but I’m not likely to add or change much until I can tell in a non-hypothetical way how the game would work (or not work) in its current iteration.

Alright, I need to try running this game again now that I can use the whole book as a reference.

So, I’m planning on having 3-4 players in 3-4 hour sessions of Masks for an undetermined campaign length (hopefully at least 10). The game would either be on Tuesdays or Thursdays, at more or less any reasonable waking time. I’m thinking Thursdays around 12 PM Central Time, but could start as late as 8 PM Central Time. The only playbooks immediately not on offer are the Delinquent and the Doomed.

I’m seeking some players who are primarily interested in grand, cartoonish, dramatic interaction with the fiction. High tolerance for the potentially silly is a must, as the “Tales to Astonish” section of the book essentially points out. Some darker moments will occasionally arise, but I’m looking to keep this campaign pretty light-hearted.

Let me know if you’re interested as well as when you’re available on those days.

Guys.

Guys.

Guys. A Doomed in our group used their sanctuary to ask the question of “How can I defeat my nemesis?” It darn-near caused me a heart attack. I did my best to answer the question, but damn. Should I have made that one off-limits?

It also seems like a weird question on my side, because I’m going to have trouble sticking to the idea of “Once they’ve met A-D requirements, the nemesis is defeated.” I feel like it’ll be hard for it to play out that neatly.

I don’t know. I’m probably just anxious. It’s probably fine, right? Tips, anyone?

Can NPCs take advantage of their influence over a PC?

Can NPCs take advantage of their influence over a PC? Like in terms of giving a PC -2 to their roll after they roll? I have assumed up till now that move can only be made by PCs. Is that correct?

On another note, can the leader of a team only mark a condition to avoid removing team from the pool in regards to the “going into battle” move, or only after that, or either?

Just finished our first session of Masks, and a couple questions came up that I didn’t know how to answer.

Just finished our first session of Masks, and a couple questions came up that I didn’t know how to answer. Any help is appreciated.

1. On someone rejecting someone’s influence: Does the “immediately act to prove them wrong” option require action other than speaking? Twice in the first session I was asked if they could just respond with a retort for that option.

2. On bringing your doom closer for the Doomed: Is that meant to be entirely player/character choice? For most choices it seems obvious that it is, but our Doomed took “Injuring innocents” as hers, and then she chose to overexert herself and it resulted in a failed unleash your powers, which then resulted in heavy, shattered glass falling on surrounding civilians, injuring them. What it comes down to is, when it’s an accidental fulfillment of the requirement for bringing your doomed closer, does it still go into effect?

Quick question: Why is The Bull’s “Thick and Thick Skinned” not called “Getting the Horns?”

Or if that doesn’t make sense, why isn’t there some other move called that? Major missed opportunity, there.

I’m not sure where to go to potentially find a group to play Masks with.

I’m not sure where to go to potentially find a group to play Masks with. I’m going to be running Masks for a group of my own very soon, but I’m severely lacking in experience of other people’s interpretations of PbtA games – Masks in particular – and would like to experience someone else’s GMing the game first hand, so I could expand my creative horizons, so to speak.

I also REALLY want to play this game. If anyone knows how I could most effectively find a group online, please let me know.
