Update to #Wyrdish, my rules-light, Destiny-inspired, sci-fantasy PbtA hack about immortal wyrdens that can be run without a GM!

The backbone is being built now. Some of the classes still need more abilities to really flesh them out, I want to shoot for about 10-12 each. The races also need racial abilities filled in. Then there will be lists and tables all full of different prompts — items and weapons, places, enemies, trouble, treasure, story hooks, etc.

Also check out the character sheet — you print it landscape and fold in half for a cute little minimalist four-page booklet/playbook.

A long time ago I started a Destiny-inspired PbtA hack called (a)Risen. I had a lot of fun working on it but the more I got into it the more complex and fiddly it began to feel. Later, my spouse and I were looking for a way to play games together, alongside one another, without needing to gather a GM (one or the other of us would often be tapped to GM). So I started designing a World of Dungeons-inspired rules-light hack called Dungeonlords, that could be played without a GM.

Then I realized that I could take the setting I felt was beginning to become bloated and rework it using the new rules system. So I introduce Wyrdish, a lighter, simpler reboot of (a)Risen that runs on my prototype GM-less Dungeonlords engine.

This is still a work in progress, of course, but the base rules are pretty filled out. I need to now start on making all the tables and details that players will be using. I hope you enjoy what I have so far though, and I’ll keep updating with more.

Has anybody ever played Scion?

Has anybody ever played Scion?

Has anybody ever played Scion? It was once a White Wolf game and now it;s Onyx Path, and it was the game that got me into tabletop games — but it was a hot mess, mechanically, and playing it was a chore. Happily, PbtA games do what I’d always wished other tabletops would. Urban Shadows, specifically, scratches the Scion itch pretty well for myself and my group.

But not all the way, all the time. Sometimes we find ourselves missing playing the children of gods, pawns in a great war between pantheons. But not enough to go back, or to attempt to learn the new 2.0 which looks hardly any better.

So, has anybody ever tried adapting Urban Shadows to fit Scion, to bring some Scion material into Urban Shadows, or anything else similar? My table is interested in seeing if we can recapture some of that old magic with a system here that’s so well done. Would it maybe be as simple as making a Scion playbook?

Is there a PbtA hack for Scion, the former White Wolf/now Onyx Path setting?

Is there a PbtA hack for Scion, the former White Wolf/now Onyx Path setting? Or something like it? I love the setting, and it’s got so much amazing lore and concepts, but the original was just an absolute mess to play — they’re releasing a 2.0 revamp from OP later this year, but I read the previews and, having played so many PbtA games since the last time I played Scion, I just can’t do it. I can’t go back to having to read a textbook of rules and systems (lore and mythology, sure! But rules… ugh).

Our table plays Urban Shadows which captures many of the things we used to love about Scion, but it’s not quite the same. I just wondered if anybody knows of anything before I go haring off to hack something.

Wyrdish is a #destiny inspired sci-fantasy game about immortal space wizards. It’s a work in progress right now, but I’m very pleased with the look so far. This format, when printed out on regular paper, gets folded in half to create an adorable little six-page booklet.

I still have to play around with some formatting before I start on the remaining playbooks, but the general idea is that this should be everything the player needs, besides some scratch paper (and dice, of course).

As part of the Destiny-inspired fantasy/sci-fi blend game I’m building, (a)Risen, I’m in need of two more classes to round out my base roster — one rogueish, the other mage-ish.

So far I’ve:

the Oathkeeper, something like a Paladin Jedi;

the Astromancer, a hexing, math-of-the-universe tinkering intellect;

the Slinger, a sneaking, hacking, robo-buddy having ranger;

the Helix, a flowing martialist warrior ascete;

the Battledancer, a berserker who uses an angry trance to ride the knife’s edge of destruction without losing themselves to it;

the Catalyst, a not-quite-bardic arcanist socialite with powerful incantations for buffing and deadly hidden weapons for stabbing and/or shooting;

and the Sin Eater, a weird patron of the Deep (aka space) with necromancy and Dungeon World Immolator vibes.

So, I want 9, three of each of the kinda classic archetypes (warriors, rogues, mages), and I’m short one more mage and one more rogue.

Any thoughts as to archetypes or classic tropes I’m missing? I’m trying to maintain some while subverting others, but I’m not quite sure where to go with the last two.

What about a playbook where the character is 3 people, each a different aspect of a person, none whole or as powerful until or if they somehow combine? That’d make for a nifty assassin.

Thoughts?

Made a few changes to my #Destiny-inspired hack, #(a)Risen. Have Paths and Basic Moves complete. Went with 3 path moves instead of 5 — actually results in more flexibility and variety, and real choices to be made. Also got Racial moves — a good start, but I need more I think.

Working on Classes and character creation next, then Harm, Healing, and Advancement, and then extra details and play guides.

Considering making a hack for Destiny, the wildly popular (and even more wildly aggravating) MMO shooter from Bungie. Three main classes, each with three subclasses, would make for nine distinct playbooks, plus 3 races with maybe different per-class bonuses.

Then you have all the special moves. Supers tracked by number of kills maybe? 2 kills gives you a grenade, five kills gives you your super? Stats from the game: Recovery, Armor, Agility, Strength, Discipline, Intellect. Perhaps there are no stat advances, but instead modifiers are tied to gear?

Not sure how to handle death and ghosts and whatnot. Wouldn’t consider moving forward until I got a solid grasp on that. People do die, for sure, including Guardians — but “respawning” is a thing, too… Perhaps death leaves the ghost unprotected, and unless the guardian can be revived quickly on the field they’ll be reborn, thanks to their ghost, in a new or altered form, or with some other change?

The game is kind of an empty place, but there’s so much lore there that it’s actually a really robust world. What say ye?
