Writing moves you don’t think will see use

So I’m running this Dnd game and using DungeonWorld Principles whenever possible/I remember(Cos Dnd is all “figure it out yourself”). And I’m writing this move for dealing with the arcane horror living in one of the PCs head.

The way I’ve written it I’m pretty sure they’ll never use the move but they will consider it.

I like the way it shows them what the monster could do if they let it BUT I can feel Baker scowling about moves that don’t engage…. or something

  1. I’m on the bus, writing is awkward. Anyway, if you have a monster in your head and the ability to ignore it for no cost, what does the monster do? I’m thinking for more reading look at the Hoarder and that relationship. Maybe you need a relationship with the monster, like Hx.

You put (or the PC put) an arcane horror in someone’s head and it doesn’t do anything, and Chekov will come for you.

  2. Inside your mind there is a box

When you open the box choose 1:

You or an Ally gain access to a theme

    You cease to age

Have a dream of Symbol and Prophesy

Learn of the corruption of an individual or organisation

Ensure the Loyalty of a Weak Vassal

    Then Roll with Arcana and

    12+: Choose none

    10+: Choose one

    7+:Choose two

6 or less: Choose one, Then I’ll choose one.

The Sorrow can speak to you in your thoughts

The Sorrow can speak to one of your allys in their thoughts

The Sorrow may leave your mind and walk around

The Sorrow learns a language of my choice

One ally gains The Cursed Mark of the Wolf

One ally gains The Sombre Mark of the Cold Fire

One ally gains The Colourless Mark of the Grave

One ally gains The Earnest Mark of the Free Woods

A theme is a thing that I’m using all backwards(4e btw) but which is about equivalent in power to “mark an advancement” but not repeatable

I’ve translated the roll into PbtA, the real move has DCs with approximately the same hit chance.

My hope is that they’ll use this move 2 or 3 times, someone will get voices, someone will get a mark, then they’ll decide that it’s terribly evil and never use it again….. but remember it occasionally and wonder if power is worth the cost
