Working on a character with a cerebral implant that remotely connects to local networks (shipboard, stationside, or planetary). This is the biggest piece of equipment the character owns, so it’s a Class 2. Mods are Class 1s; can they be upgraded? Does Connector have to be a physical connection (like Artoo Detoo), or could it be modified to Connected?

Session two is over and, boy, is “Cramped Quarters” a joy. There was a lot of travel and the little “vignettes” we played out of people’s interactions were really the high points. This was also our first go at full-fledged spaceship combat. It went really well, which everybody finding something to do between dealing with malfunctions, patching holes, manning weapons and shields, doing electronic warfare, and actually flying. I was a bit worried about this, but it was easy to keep everyone engaged. It was definitely an “all hands” effort.

Carta Galaxia – Art Spotlight #1 – “Recharge”

In the Art Spotlight, we’ll take a look at the chapter art for CG (by Claudia Cangini), as well as the artist brief.

1 – Recharge

A young, scrawny woman sits in the foreground in a window frame, looking out at the city in the background. She’s lounging with her back against the side of the window frame, one leg bent. The woman is skinny, and she’s wearing a tanktop and shorts. Her left arm and left (the ones facing the viewer) is missing, and her shoulder and mid-thigh end in cybernetic sockets. She’s holding up a fast-food soda cup with a “re-charging” icon on it.

Her cybernetic arm and leg are hanging from dangling recharge cables on the opposite side of the window. They should look well-used and obviously robotic in nature.

The city in the background is a typical futuristic city scene, oddly shaped skyscrapers, flying cars, cloudy sky, whatever fits in the framing between the young woman and her cybernetics.

Two sessions into a new campaign in which we’re trying to do ad hoc drop-in-drop-out, self-contained sessions. Workspaces and crews have featured heavily into the moves of the players. Among the exploits:

– A player’s “beautiful staff” crew deactivated the artificial gravity on the team’s ship to gain the upper hand on a boarding party

– Another player successfully charmed some members of that boarding party in the ship’s Culinary workspace and taught them to make really good sandwiches

– An engineering crew was used as a distraction to make the boarding party cover them while the players sneaked up behind the boarding party using a hardpoint access hatch

– In the second session, the players needed to retreat with the retrieved cargo and forgot that one of them had a Luxury skill-granted NPC butler who brought the shuttle in to pick them up

I’ve been really happy with the system as we get our feet under us. Thanks!

Started my campaign and it went really well.

Started my campaign and it went really well. They got a lead on an ancient disabled military capital ship and (after dealing with the insane ship AI) looted it for everything they could pack into their hold… and then used their shares to pay off debts. Working as designed! 🙂

One thing I came up with was a new Attire upgrade: Powered. It gives you the same benefits as the “Heavy Lifting” skill when wearing it. Figured it was a good fit for things like Powered Armor and the cargo lifter from Aliens.

Awesome News: Interior Artist for Carta Galaxia!

I’m very pleased to announce that Claudia Cangini will be doing the art for Carta Galaxia. You may recognize her work from Fate Accelerated, 1001 Nights, The Watch, and so many others.

I’ve been a big fan of her use of shadow and light, patterned textures, and most importantly the diversity of shape, age, and ethnicity that she lends her characters (especially the women). You can bet that I’ve been leveraging those strengths in my artist briefs.

In a couple of days I’ll be revealing the first piece along with the creative brief.

Writing Stuff… or lack there-of

Whuff. Tough couple of weeks on my end, I’m afraid. Rough days at work, coupled with a toddler in the throes of the terrible twos. Not much to show, writing-wise. I’m hoping things will pick up soon. Maybe as we warm up into spring and I start getting more sunlight.

Up to my usual tricks of using UW rules to make slightly more unusual characters.

I’d mentioned to a friend of mine that I’d been thinking about UW again and realised you could no only use the same rules, but the very same CHARACTER and they could fit in equally well in a Crimson Skies game as a Disney’s TaleSpin game.

So I started making one. It all went fine until I got to his Class 1 and Class 2 assets. I’m completely drawing a blank, aside from possibly a meshweave pilot’s jacket or something. Anyone have any ideas?
