ATTACK OF THE HARD COPIES Part 2: COPY HARDER

Ok folks, the Print+PDF bundle is back up in the store! Shipping is available throughout the U.S. via USPS Priority Mail.

As for our international customers, I am sorry to say that shipping is INSANE. I have broken it down to geographic regions and averaged out the price…but it is still crazy. There is an “Everywhere Else” shipping but that has been purposely set very high because there are some places I just don’t think we are gonna be able to ship to. If you find yourself in one of those places please send me a message via the store site and we may be able to work something out. But as a general rule shipping will be cost prohibitive for most international customers. I am truly sorry about it, and I know the feeling. (Lived in Korea for nearly a decade.) But it is what it is.

I know other PbtA game makers consider it free marketing but I want to make sure.

I am assuming that the Simple/Difficult/Borderline/Possible framework does not have actual impact on the roll and only serves as a guideline for how severe the consequences of a miss or partial success are.

For example if I were to take the fight between Naiki and the Burmese military in my own novel. She starts with an earthquake that lowers the land for about a hundred yards in every direction. Then she kicks an APC sending it end over end in one direction. So far she’s rolled well and not suffered any corruption or else only trace ignorable levels. Then she materializes her chi into a barrage of razor chi-discs, a feat she hasn’t trained to reliably do yet, and rolls poorly so even as she sends the discs to cut down some soldiers the blood vessels in her hands and upper arms burst causing bruising up from her fingers as the stress on her life force results in corruption that causes the physical symptoms. She then stomps her foot to the ground in order to create a spike of stone and tilt over the ogre main battle tank pelting her with 50 cal. Similar bruising and muscle tears spread up her leg as the tank is neutralized. Finally a soldier with an anti-tank weapon takes aim and sends out a rocket her way. At the last moment she raises a chi shield blocking the rocket entirely but the stress of raising such a powerful aura after stressing both her innate supernatural talents and her mother’s chi training causes a massive surge of corruption through her body sending her unconscious and slowly dying. And also serving as an object lesson why psychic/supernatural warriors generally fight at much lower than their maximum capabilities rather than sprint for one battle and being useless for anything that follows.

That sounds like several partial successes and misses using difficult or borderline skills ending with a lucky Last Chance roll which lets her get back in the fight later when she gets rescued by other characters and healing from her sister.

Also. Is it possible to spend achievements to move something from borderline to difficult as a character trains to be more efficient with their powers?

As an example. Naiki’s mother could easily summon multiple chi discs with no problem despite having lower innate levels of chi than her daughter. Long training has made her able to have more effect with less effort.

Hello, Imperilers!

Hello, Imperilers!

Hello, Imperilers!

Any thoughts on doing a non-combative or rescue action scene? I’m used to doing Apocalypse World, mostly, so for that system I’d use a Countdown Clock or something to keep track of, say, the party’s dwindling water supply. But there’s no equivalent for WiP…

I can think of two ways to do it. You could make the disaster a kind of villain, like “Burning Building” would have the drive “to consume, to spread” and maybe the PC’s can defeat it with positive conditions, like “blaze contained” or “all civilians evacuated”? It could give the party ‘indirect conditions’ if it didn’t exactly burn them, like “civilian casualties” or “rough memories”. Maybe a custom twist on the Take Down move would help it apply here?

The other way to do it would be ‘by the book’… using Defy Danger and Use Environment, no custom stuff, just do the scene until there’s consensus that the issue has been dealt with, or run out of control.

Any experiences doing a scene like this in game, ‘by the book’ or not?

In the last night WiP game a question came up: how a Possible power is played in the fiction?

In the last night WiP game a question came up: how a Possible power is played in the fiction?

In the last night WiP game a question came up: how a Possible power is played in the fiction? easy is self explanatory. Difficult need time, control or concentration. Borderline in a life threatening situation. But how a possible power is triggered, able to be used or played in the fiction?

Okay this is probably going to sound stupid, but how do players get Advancement points?

Okay this is probably going to sound stupid, but how do players get Advancement points? Is it only through drive books? Or are there other ways? Do they get an advancement point for rolling a 6 or below? If its through just drive books, then how do drive books work, I am finding it hard to get my head round them, you have to choose one during character gen, also how can a player change a drive book? Can they change?

How do people counter the urge to do ability check rolls that people carry over from other games?

How do people counter the urge to do ability check rolls that people carry over from other games?

How do people counter the urge to do ability check rolls that people carry over from other games? As I understand it, there shouldn’t really be constant perception rolls or dexterity checks. Everything should start with the fiction, be it from the player or the EIC, and trigger moves. So, how would you expect a player to detect a trap, such as security sensors? I would expect that the player would simply see the sensors if the player knows security systems (per the fiction) and no roll would be required. Evading the system would require a Defy Danger, of course.

In general, isn’t there more of a tendency for things to happen without rolls in WiP (pronounced ‘Whip’, of course), as compared to mechanics-heavy systems like D&D?
