Went back to illustrate the split-party adventure we had in Masks: The one where the boys (Captain Bowmaster, Torque, Halfpenny—Beacon, Outsider, Protégé) go to a rave to investigate dealers of superpower-granting drugs, and the girls (Sonia, Panic—Bull, Delinquent) go to a foreign embassy to interrogate a prisoner—the wily Viscount Consternation.
How much planning do you put in before your first session?
How much planning do you put in before your first session?
I admit that preparing for a first session of any PbtA game makes me anxious. On one hand, I want to have a whole cast of NPCs and villains ready to go with action-packed drama in my pocket so I can drop the PCs right into the fire for an explosive opening that will have them hooked. On the other, I want to leave a lot of blanks so that the character creation process can fill in the world with relevant NPCs that come with ties to the PCs, leaving the role of major villain to them to insert their Nemesis, spawned when they answer questions about their characters. The story needs to be about them!
How do you all balance those two to feel ready for the first session?
Follow-up, how many of you do session 0 as character generation only, and how many combine with session 1 where you actually play the characters through some scenes?
My players are all visibly non-human, so attending a normal school is problematic.

Has anyone used a “hero high” in their game? A school for super teens?
I have all Masks sourcebook, so I’ve the 10-Base playset, the 5 New Playbook, Soldier & Brain but I’ve lost a chance to view and use Harbinger…what’s your opinion about ?
I’m looking for ideas on how to represent a character defined by their rejection of a villainous legacy or mentor.
I’m looking for ideas on how to represent a character defined by their rejection of a villainous legacy or mentor… something like how Stephanie Brown became Spoiler as a heroic foil to her father, or Cassandra Cain’s relationship with father David (I think Stephanie proposed a “difficult parents club” at some point).
Both of these examples are un-powered individuals who could be played as a Beacon (indeed, Brown is listed as inspiration for that playbook), but the Beacon doesn’t really focus on the right aspects of their stories. Whereas the Legacy and Protégé do focus on the relationship with an adult figure, but they’re both the wrong kind of relationship… while not always working smoothly, both seem to expect a mostly-positive relationship rather than outright hostility.
Thoughts? The character I’m looking to model has powers, but they’re relatively subtle… minor real magic masquerading as sleight of hand, that sort of thing. The Delinquent would be a pretty good match in terms of the moves, but likewise lacks the right focus and flavour…
So I’ve done some build up for prom in my game and one player is going to do his swap characters (retire or become a paragon; changing from Interface the delinquent with a police detective mom to Kid Slueth the beacon). I’ve some ideas to make it a big deal for other characters (Nova’s going with a friend being more than friend; Outsider’s alien roommate going with her crush; doomed->protege being dragged along with other’s messes) but prom wasn’t a big thing for me growing up and I want to properly handle it. Are there any suggestions from the group think on how to handle prom?
I’m GMing since about two months a Masks game and i want to introduce to the comunity the team. From top to botom right:
Exelion (The Nova) : He is a selfconcius raw energy being from the outer space. Came to earth searching knowledge and after a brew time living with homeless in Argentina, he move to Halcyon city atracted by the superhéroe community there, arrive just in time to join to the team stoping an alien invasion.
Crimson Bastard (The Legacy) : The offspring of a well know Heroine called Crimson Knightress gifted with a godlike Beauty like his mother. He intend to be a Good hero like The golden generation but in between his grandfather (A Late golden generation Mage from another plane of existence called Questalia) and Crimson Knightress battle to model him in to a diferent hero.
Elastro (The Star): Another alien in the team, but this one came from a planet full of shapeshifters. In earth he try to be one of the most famous Hero of the world (or the universe. Why not?) inspired in the Exemplars actual leader, Elastic, who is his mentor. Elastro also is a well know YouTuber with a great audience of teenagers lovers of the powered people. He always is recording the adventures of the team.
Red X (The Bull): A baby stealed from his home and raised by a corporation of ninjas, mad cientist and criminals to create the perfect weapon. After the order was desmantelated, he live a brief period of his life like a teenage criminal until a Heroine “All mighty Girl” take in adoption and teach him how to be a good hero.
They are now the Claw sponsored like by the Exemplars and the Halcyon City Herald to be the vanguard of the new generation of heroes.
