Hey MotW Roadhouse

Hey MotW Roadhouse,

First, thank you for being such a great resource for folks trying to run and play MotW. Like many others, I’m sure, I got interested after listening to the short arc on TAZ. I was pretty much in love with the system once I realized combat didn’t devolve into two hours of dice rolling.

I ran my first session of MotW this past Saturday, and came away with rave reviews from everyone involved. I have some great players, and we found we were able to work through the rules pretty intuitively. Only one thing came up that left me at a bit of a loss. The group had a cop friend (NPC) that was present for a mid-mystery battle. He ended up taking a few shots at the bad guys, and since I was a little unclear on rules for when an NPC helps the PCs in combat, I ended up assuming he had +0 on all his stats, and just rolling for him. I’m aware this goes against the rule of the keeper never rolling dice.

To sum up, are there appropriate rules/moves I should be flexing when an NPC is helping the PCs during a fight?

Last Halloween I had the good fortune to participate in a short MotW campaign run by Tyler Lominack of the Gauntlet RPG community. The two session game was a lot of fun.

Hey y’all!

Hey y’all!

Hey y’all! I’ve been running a Monster of the Week Actual Play podcast called “Troublesome Times in Tumbleson County.” What if the Winchester brothers got lost at the crossroads and stumbled into “O Brother Where Out Thou?”

We just released a new episode which is here:

The Spooky in my group chose the tags, “Depression, Guilt, and Secrets” for her dark side. I’m having trouble thinking of ways to implement these in a meaningful way that could affect her use of powers without creating a new mechanic that may be unbalanced.

So far, I’ve toyed with the idea that she may use her powers to investigate, but she has to keep what she’s learned secret from the other hunters and if they find out she’s keeping those secrets, the guilt causes her powers to stop for the session.

tl; dr: our wronged picks the smite move from the divine playbook. Could her signature weapon be considered as a divine weapon for the smite move and so always count as a monster’s weakness?

Hi guys! The Wronged in my new game is an angel-hunter (establishing that angels are not always do-gooders). First mystery, they fight an angelic creature whose weaknesses are the will of god, the weapons of the devil, or a pure heart. They confront him in a church. She drops on her knees facing the holy cross and starts praying to get help from god in destroying this creature. Big magic, she already is in the right place saying the right words, but still needs to use magic to communicate with something. She obviously spends luck, et voilà, her hand cannon starts shooting holy bolts. More over, her 10+ kick some ass roll allows her to force him where she want him: she wants him in hell. She then proceeds to pick her new improvement: we’re deciding between +1 weird, or the Smite move from the divine playbook. Now, could her signature wronged weapon be considered as the divine weapon for the move to make it always count like a monster’s weakness? Thank you all for taking the time to read all of this!

Please give some examples of tasks you’ve assigned Divine characters operating under the orders of their “Boss from Beyond”. I just want to get a feel from how this plays out. I get it in theory, but want to see some in practical application. Cheers.

Just wanted to let anyone interested know that “The Adventure Zone” podcast will be running MotW for a couple of weeks as one of their experimental arcs. The latest episode, Setup – The Adventure Zone: Amnesty (released yesterday) explains the game for listeners and sets up their setting and characters so when they start play next week everyone has the basics. Their first big campaign was D&D and was released every other week but they’ve decided to go ahead with an every week release for the shorter campaigns they’re trying out.
