I’m a developer with a specific interest in random/procedural generators for tabletop games, and I’m thinking of building such a tool for Uncharted Worlds.

I have just more or less devoured Jack McDevitt’s Academy series.

I have just more or less devoured Jack McDevitt’s Academy series. Any fans here? Here’s the iconic bit of Gear from the series:

The Flickinger Field E-Suit (Attire, Class 1 Simple, Sealed)

Statistically, it’s an EVA suit. But it’s actually an energy field that protects the wearer from the vacuum of space both in terms of atmosphere (bring along some oxygen canisters) and temperature (the iconic image from the series is the space explorer walking on the surface of an airless rock in a pair of shorts and a university t-shirt).

Are Might, Reach, Structure, and Ideology meant to be stats for factions, or just questions that should be answered?

E.g. (making up off the top of my head)

Super Space Squadrons faction:

– Might: SSS are trans stellar military force. Their force strength ranges from detached destroys to cruiser squadrons to full walls of battle.

– Reach: SSS are all over, it is rare for a system to not at least have a visit from the SSS once a quarter.

– Structure: Military hierarchy

– Ideology: Trope-ishly “Good guys.”

Factions.

Factions.

Factions.

My group wanted a lot of factions, so now everybody is making one. So now, in our setting, there are six factions fighting or scheming for influence while most of the galaxy is under Citadel Council-esque control.

I wanted each faction to get a single turn between our weekly games to help the galaxy feel alive and encourage player involvement, but I’m stuck on two competing ideas of how to do so. How do you use factions?

First Idea: Each faction assigns +2, +1, +0, -1 across Might, Reach, Structure, and Ideology. Then those scores are used for their own faction moves which are just Face Adversity, Get Involved, and Assessment. Using these they can try to get an edge on each other, or The Party, or even dangle a forgiven Debt or Favor in front of The Party to do their work for them. If they roll low, other factions get to see their weaknesses.

Second Idea: Use Might, Reach, Structure, and Ideology as stats that change with the board. Your Might score controls how many fleets/armies you can have and your Reach directly corresponds to how many planets (not systems) you can control. Structure might determine how many moves or actions you could take in a round, and Ideology could be used like Might to defend or extend your influence.

Third Idea: I just ask players what they want their faction to be up to between sessions and make something up with a sort of galactic news network.

What do you understand as “leveraging your +Mettle as a manifestation of solid willpower”?

Does it mean use +Mettle as +Armor?

Or does it mean that a character can Face Adversity with +Mettle instead of Brace For Impact?

How did you use it?

Hey everyone!

So I’m going to run a UW campaign, and the pitch for it, which neither me or my friends could resist because it sounds too cool, is basically “Firefly meets Gundam meets Cowboy Bebop”. The space opera part is going to be the main thing, and UW is perfect for it, but I also want Mechas to play a good part on this game.

The standard asset creation rules are brilliant, BUT one thing that I’m looking into is making some very light, specific changes to how Mechas would function. What I came up with is pretty simple, and I do like the sound of it, but I’d love your opinions if it sounds too broken:

Every Mecha would have its own Physique and Mettle stats, along with its Armor. They would all start at -1, but players would have 1+X points (X being the Mecha’s Class) to distribute between the three, with a +2 max, so a Class 2 Mecha would have 3 points to either equal them all to 0/0/0 or max one off to +2/0/-1.

My reasoning for it is mainly to give more possibilites to the players by disassociating the rolls while controlling their Mecha from their own Stats, so they could make Mechas that contrast or complement their own weaknessess, with differing Stats.

What do you guys think? Has anything like this been done before, does it sound too horrible and broken? Would love to hear your opinions! Thanks in advance!

Hi folks.

Hi folks.

Hi folks. I’ve been having some really weird bugs with this Community. Can anyone check and tell me if they can see posts I made in Carta Galaxia or anything past a month ago?

[edit] Apparently Google+ changed the default settings to “Top Posts”, which means hiding most of them? Seriously it’s like Google is actively trying to kill this platform. That and Hangouts.

So I’m having a bumpy ride with GMing UW.

How do you prep to a session as GM.

Do you prep like a mission jump point with few questions like the example from the book or from “21 jump points”

or do you prep a mission by yourself

or do you let your players drive the narrative and you are there to react ??
