This is a preview of the rules of a high-fantasy PbtA game I’ve been working on, called Land of the God-kings. This preview introduces the basic moves, the concept of Armies and Followers, the Primal, Immortal, Monarch, and Shadow playbooks, and well as the Monster and Martial follower playbooks. Any feedback would be appreciated. Enjoy!

I’ve written out a draft of some of the playbooks for the high-fantasy game I’m working on, inspired by a friend deciding they wanted to play characters like Sauron or Smaug instead of Aragorn or Frodo. This game takes heavy inspiration from mythology and high-fantasy tropes, as well as games like Exalted, High-level D&D, and Godsend.

These playbooks are for the Primal, a being that is more like a force of nature than an actual creature, inspired by dragons, Fenris the wolf from Norse mythology, and the like, and the Immortal, an undead, construct, elf, or otherwise unaging being, inspired by the likes of Celabrimbor (hope I spelled that right) from the shadow of war video games, and the T’lan Imass from the Malazan book of the Fallen.

Any critiques or thoughts would be much appreciated!

I decided to start working again on a hack I lost all my files for a little while ago, Land of the God-Kings, a game about playing a powerhouses in a high-fantasy setting.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas they’d like to share concerning playbooks, moves, and what else should be in the book besides rules? Thanks!

Once, you lived in the Land of the God-Kings. No longer. By magic, luck, or something stranger, you have been evicted from the world, imprisoned or banished. But your power grows…

The main inspiration while writing this playbook was Sauron from Lord of the Rings, the Elder Gods from the Lovecraft Mythos, and the Crippled God from the Malazan Book of the Fallen

Credit goes to u/cilice on reddit for the idea for the playbook.

Hey! First time posting here, but I wanted to share what I’ve posted so far for my PBtA game, Land of the God-Kings.
